August 10 2010 - 1:07 pm ET | Dan Meyer | RCR Wireless News

IE Market Research Corp. released a report predicting AT&T Mobility (T) would surpass Verizon Wireless (VZ) in total subscribers during the second quarter of 2011 and that the AT&T Mobility will post the highest earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization results among domestic operators by 2014.

The Canadian-based research firm said it expects the U.S. wireless market to top 365 million connections by the end of 2014 with AT&T Mobility securing an industry leading 127 million mobile subscriber connections or 34.8% market share. Verizon Wireless is forecast to count about 118.7 million customers or 32.5% market share at the end of 2014, while the firm said i...

The wireless marketplace is too fickle to predict anything more then 9 months in advance, and they're looking at EBITDAs four years out?

Well, poppycock is one way to try and drive page views/give the illusion of relevance.

I mean, they're still painting Sprint as a dwindling company expected to lose another million customers over the next three years, too?

Gimme a break, think tank. Sprint and T-mobile are both very much in the game right now, because there are a lot of cheapskates in America who like their products and pricing, and are willing to sacrifice quality for the sake of cost.

Well if they kept the iphone to just them and with their change to capped handset data yeah it might happen. All the carries are making huge profits with unlimited data still so what you think is going to happen when you are capped with ATT and I download whatever I want (so far) with verizon on my android? Verizon will still make money on me but not the % att makes on their customers. And you know what. We let it happen. I bet if they lost half their data users over capped data they would reverse course quick!

AT&T's tiered data system is going to work well for them. At worst they might see a 10% turnover from it in the long term.

I'm convinced we're going to see more and more organizations moving to capped data systems. It is better for the investors bottom line and it's the responsible thing to do when trying to keep the profitable 98% of your customers happy with their service. This will become common in Cable/ DSL systems as well, mark my words.

It's also the ONLY solution to net neutrality that the FCC can't jump in and screw up with "regulations"

that sounds like a personal problem, or maybe you brought it upon yourself for having Verizon... I can get WiFi at the mall, at school, at work, Pandera, Starbucks, Airport, etc etc...

Having a capped data plan with ANY carrier sounds like a personal problem. Those of us who have grandfathered data plans with the Duopoly had best think long and hard before terminating those lines.

Verizon has truly unlimited data on phones and from what they say have no intentions on capping 3g. so why is verizon brought into this? And I have 3g were att does not and I don't need wifi at the mall or anywhere cuz 3g works fine for me.

read that and tell me why they need to again. Just because att has issues meeting demand its not about money!!! Verizon has stated they will not cap 3g for handset data. Not talking about hotspot or data card. 4g they are talking about it. But who knows. If sprint and clear still hold unlimited they will be forced to follow. And they will be able to unlike att which cant meet demand now. And another report shows verizon had more data consumed on their network then att so don't say att has way more demand than verizon.

This isn't about network infrastructure or who's pushing out the most data. It's about cost of service to the consumer. Simple economics.

I could have an iPhone on AT&T for $15/month. (I personally don't want an iPhone, so I won't buy one, but it's an option available to me and every other American.)

Find me anything even CLOSE to comparable on any other US carrier. Please!!! I'd like to see it!!!

One-size-fits-all data pricing can NOT compete with that. Things have to change. Almost anyone who isn't streaming media all day long (over 3G) can get by with 200 MB per month.

It is AT&T that has made the brilliant move here. No matter how all the self-centered tech bloggers spin it, this is not a marketplace blunder by any stre...

I have a Blackberry on Verizon and use way less than 200 MB per month of data. I have a Microsoft Enterprise Server in the office. Verizon wants $45 per month for a BES connection to this server. If I was on AT&T, it would cost me $15 per month for the BES connection (since AT&T does not charge extra for BESX; Verizon is the only carrier that does to my knowledge). Verizon is triple the cost. That is a huge difference, if I have this right, and really makes me consider changing service providers when my contract is up. Unfortunately, due to finally having all my family (located in several states) on Verizon, this decision is not as easy as it sounds (there's a reason why the carriers offer free mobile to mobile; it locks people in).

wow were do some come from. That is the point of cap pricing. To stop you from downloading all you want because they can not handle it. I have an andriod if I used only 200 megs I would get me a regular phone that could just do email. I listen to pandora and slacker and I average about 500 to a gig a month. Sorry but an Iphone is not worth it with caps. They are putting the caps there because of the iphone. Do some research and you will see them talk that iphone users just sit there and use 50 to 60% of all att bandwidth used. i would be happy to pay an extra 15 a month to have unlimited then 15 a month with a cap. I may not use it but just in case I want to be able to if I leave town or something were I use my phone heavily.

Part of what the new pricing does is drive unprofitable (unreasonably heavy) users away from AT&T into the loving arms of their competitors, thus making their COMPETITORS less cost effective. It's brilliant.

A great myth perpetuated in the cellular community is that ALL customers are "good" customers. Far from it. If you're an iPhone diehard using 8 gigs a month on $29.99 3G plan because you're too lazy to switch back and forth with WiFi when it's available AND you have the gall to drive up their operating costs by calling in twice a month during your spare time to b*tch about the crappy coverage, they don't want you.

They don't care if you're
