The iPhone Excuse
By Sam Grobart
A couple of weeks ago, my colleague Matt Richtel - a handsome devil if ever there was one - spoke truth to power. He said the thing that no one was saying, yet needed to be said. Here it is in a nutshell:
For all its abilities and powers, the iPhone is a tremendous pocket computer, but a lousy phone.
And he’s absolutely right. I’ve owned an iPhone 3G since Christmas, and I could add my voice to the growing angry chorus. See, before I was with Apple and AT&T, I was a Verizon customer for years. And I don’t know what it’s like where you live, but here in 212/718, you can’t s...

lol iphone isn't a smart phone, its just like the instinct, its not a pda or smart phone.
Are you kidding me??? You must wake up every day and tell yourself that. Apple has set the standard of new PDA's so high and now everyone is trying to compete. Your right it might not be labled a PDA but it is far better then most PDA's. The instinct has nothing on the iPhone and can not be compared to being even remotely close to the same kind of phone. WOW I can't believe you would even say something that stupid in public.

Not saying instinct is better..... but you said it had nothing over the iphone.....
Please tell me how it ISN'T a smart phone?
Steve jobs was working on push email and syncing it with outlook, I believe they pulled it though.
It was geared as a non-business smartphone.
No, it is not "like a blackberry" because it's not a business focused phone. Until the advent of the iphone, most smart phones were business phones by default because that is why they were created, and they were the only customer subset that seemed ok with paying for a data plan.
Then the iphone launched and marketed itself as a media device for the rest of us. It was cool, it was hip, and it was apple.
So is the iphone a business smartphone? No. It won't be as long as it can't connect to enterprise servers.
But it is still a smartphone in that it is created in keeping you act...

From this you sir will put your foot in your mouth. iphone has everything listed above. If you said as above smartphones/pda is the same then this being said the iphone is a pda/smartphone.
Who cares?
Technically, my brother in laws insurance classifies his 1992 Toyota Paseo as a sports car, even though it has 250,000 miles, a duct tape sunroof and passenger window, and only hits 60 mph on a downhill with a strong wind behidn it. Does that make it a sports car? People get so embroiled in labels - I think that's why ATT labled the data package on the iPhone as the "iPhone data package". Its not the PDA pacakge, it has its own package. The iPhone is different from everything else, it doesn't fit one "standa...

I think people are getting too wrapped up in trying to "label" or "define" the iPhone. Does the iPhone do a lot of things that PDA's/Smartphones do? Yes. But technically, per ATT's guidelines it's not a PDA/Smartphone.

By that logic, the Pre would be "the number 1 thread" because it also has THREE responses.
Stop calling us fanboys when you can't get past your own raving.

I don't mind being called a fanboy. I love my service and my carrier.
If you, on the other hand are offended by that title, may I point out that I have never personally called you that. So, if you are taking offense, then it's your own guilty conscience at work.

I've been thinking about the rumor of Apple creating a CDMA Iphone. What if they are waiting for Verizon to open their network to other devices and are planning to sell the CDMA Iphone directly to consumers? The rumor I've heard is that Verizon turned down the Iphone because Apple wanted a cut of the monthly data revenue. If Apple sells directly to the consumer then they should be able to collect that monthly fee directly, no? Hmmmmm...
It's as annoying to us as our "nationwide coverage" ads are to you (from your record of posting on them) So yes, there will be a lot of discussion about the iphone, this doesn't make it "the #1 topic." that title goes to either 1)anything with alltel 2) the random "new phones coming out soon" thread (especially blackberries)
Centralized application stores (accessable from the device) for smartphones. I know dumbphones had that availability, but smartphones had to go to 3rd party sources (ie Handango).
Enhanced Web Browsers. WinMo, BB, Palm and even dumb phones had web browsers in them, but they weren't perfected. Now, the smartphones are producing better web browsers every year and we have a middle tier of "smarter dumbphones"
If I missed something else that made them "groundbreaking", then add to ...
