Only a few days after the iPhone went on sale, hackers were already kicking the wheels and checking under the hood to see if they could pimp out Apple's locked-down smartphone. After a month, they've made surprising progress. Below, we detail some of the milestone hacks for what has been called "the most significant consumer electronics product ever."

Most of the hacks that have been publicized so far are aimed at controlling or enhancing your own iPhone, but a darker side has ...

Ordinarily, the iPhone needs to be activated from within iTunes and registered with the carrier, AT&T, before it can be used for anything except telling the time and calling 911. Jon Lech Johansen (aka "DVD Jon"), who is notorious for cracking the CSS protection scheme on DVDs, took only five days to write a program that can bypass the activation step. It's called Phone Activation Server 1.0. Of course, if you don't have an AT&T account, the phone part won't work, but this hack does get you Wi-Fi, web surfing, e-mail and music capabilities.

Once the iPhone has been activated, it is possible to substitute the supplied AT&T SIM with another AT&T or Cingular SIM. Why would you do this? If you already have an account with AT&T, you can transfer it to your iPhone by dropping in your old phone's SIM card. This hack will let you use a business account (otherwise not available for the iPhone) or a pre-paid account with your iPhone. Another way to get a prepaid account for your iPhone is to fake bad credit. Here's how: During activation, keep entering a bogus Social Security number and eventually iTunes will give up and offer you a pre-pay account. Sweet. (The same trick also works if you actually do have bad credit and use your real Social Security number.)

Tilt is a game which takes advantage of the iPhone's tilt sensors, the things which cause the display to flip when you change the orientation of the handset. Developer Joe Hewitt created Tilt at iPhoneDev Camp, and the game involves tilting the phone to control the main character, Flip, and help him eat falling leaves and butterflies. It's no Wii Tennis, but it is a nice demonstration of the iPhone's innovative controls.

IPhoneDrive is a graphical file transfer tool for the iPhone. Just hook the phone up to your Mac and you can drag and drop files to and from the iPhone, using it as an external hard drive the way God intended. Why on earth Apple didn't include this feature from the start is a mystery, since every other iPod already has a similar capability. IPhoneDrive costs $10.

The first major hack, achieved just three days after the iPhone went on sale, gives wannabe iPhone programmers access to the phone's basic firmware -- the code that makes it run. The iPhone Dev Wiki people managed to download the iPhone firmware from the iTunes server where it sits ready for people who need to do a factory reset. Opening the two encrypted disk images contained within was trickier, but soon yielded the passwords for root access (which gives you superuser privileges) and the default user (named "mobile"), both of which are essential for further access to the innards of the operating system.

To properly dig around inside any computer, you need some form of access to the underlying system. In this case it's Unix, which OS X is based on. The iPhoneInterface application allows just that. First arriving just over a week after the iPhone launch, iPhoneInterface grants access to the shell, the inner sanctum of Unix. It requires that you make, borrow or steal a serial-to-iPhone cable, but once connected, you should -- in theory at least -- have access to the whole OS.

Once you've got access to the shell, the next step is actually running command-line utilities from it. Nightwatch, member of the iPhone Dev Wiki, built the ARM/Mach-O Toolchain, a set of tools to compile software for the iPhone. He or she also recently released a working shell, which enables you to run command line utilities on the iPhone. This is probably the most significant hack to date as it means you can write and run your own applications on the phone. Nightwatch's utilities don't have the gloss of the iPhone's multi-touch interface, or even a graphical interface of any kind, but real programmers don't need pretty pictures, right? Here is a list of the Unix commands that the Toolchain supports, including remote login access (telnet) an...

Oddly, despite being an iPod loaded with music, Apple lets you use only the standard -- and fairly lame -- ringtones that ship with the iPhone. There's not even an option to purchase and download new ringtones from AT&T. If you are feeling brave, however, you can use some of the previously mentioned applications to add custom ring tones, in only 20 heart-stoppingly dangerous steps. You will need an Intel Mac, a copy of the iPhoneInterface utility and the iPhone firmware (both mentioned above), as well as a utility called Jailbreak (zip file) that lets you run scripts on the iPhone. This could turn your iPhone into a brick, as you are essentially recompiling the operating system, but as the video below shows, it works.

This is not strictly a hack, but it's so much fun we have to include it. Magician and "high-tech poet" Marco Tempest appeared at the SoHo Apple store on June 29th, bought an iPhone and started playing tricks. The "magic" is all just a cleverly designed full-screen video, but the timing involved to make it look like real interaction is amazing -- especially as Tempest had only the phone for half an hour. Watch the video to see the iPhone X-Ray function and the Stocks program, which dispenses real coins.
