They are about to lose me as a customer

I have been with Cingular/AT&T for nearly 6 years. Back when they were AT&T Wireless the coverage and service were great. When it moved to Cingular coverage seemed to get better, but customer service was lousy.

In the last 6 months or so I have begun to have strange coverage problems. I'm not going anywhere different that I have in the past, but suddenly there are large areas where I no longer get a signal at all. I live in Oklahoma, Tulsa to be exact.

My wife and I are on one of the family plans and have two different phones. Mine is a Nokia, her's is a Sony/Ericcsson. We are both having the same problems.

For example. I work in downtown Tulsa. In the past the signal was strong here and call quality was excellent. Now I am lucky ...

Let me guess, you have an older TDMA or "digital" phone? If that is true then your coverage is going downhill because Cingular is NOT spending money on putting up new TDMA towers in your area. You see, the TDMA netwrk is going to be turned off and it would be silly for a company to dump money into a dead network. However, other folks are busy throwing up buildings and stuff that block those signals.

If you don't have an old TDMA phone (these do NOT have SIM cards inside) and you are having coverage issues "everywhere" you go, then you have a phone problem. Here's a quick test. Drop by a Cingular store and look at how strong a signal the phones there are getting. Compare that to what your phone is getting.

Please remember that NO wirele...

I have a Nokia 6102 and my wife has a Sony Ericsson Z520. Both phones are having the problem.

The example of downtown is just one of many. There are also large areas along Highway 75 where we no longer have coverage.

The coverage around our house has gone down. In the past we could make/recieve calls in our house just fine. Strong signal, clear reception. Now we have to go outside and stand on the far North part of our yard to even get 2 bars.

There are many, many more examples that have started in the last few months.

Then switch carriers if it's not working for you.

I work for AT&T and have to call customer service all the time. 10+ times a day, in fact. They are (almost) always extremely knowledgeable and helpful. If you get on the line to customer service and the rep isnt helpful, simply hang up and call back again.

I'm sure the entire Tulsa network isn't screwed up. It is probably something with your phones or your account.

Actually I'm in south jersey and coverage used to be great in and around atlantic city. With the recent 3G launch we've had a host of problems, only with 3G devices.

Cross talk, calls starting with no audio, one way audio and reduced reception in several places.

Lucent claims there isn't a problem, but we experience it on our employee (cou) lines also and almost all of us have switched back to 2G devices. We've called the steward hotline, cust serv and have about a dozen tickets open. Our network guy tells us Lucent isn't to inclined to fix it because they don't view it as a problem, and AT&T won't/can't fix it because Lucent claims there isn't a problem.

We've just about stopped selling 3G devices with the exception of PC Card...

This is so true. Someone needs to get on this. This is a massive problem that no one seems to know about. If every goddamn tower tech didn't use a f***ing outdated Nokia 6230 because of the "really good engineering menu" maybe they would have figured it out.

To any tower techs... the CU500's engineering menu is EXACTLY like the 6230's, if not better. Switch to a goddamn 3G device so you can see what's going on!!!

Unlike others here I'll try to throw out some suggestions. Do you have a new 3G sim card? If not, you may want to go to a Corp store or a RS (for you probably a corp store - they may give it to you for free). I've had several customers recently report much the same issue... and a change to a 3G sim card seems to fix the problem.

I'm not sure if it's the sim card itself, the re-initialization or what, but it's worked on about 6 customer phones (3 of them 6102i). I had one woman's phone that just would not get off of roaming until we got her a new sim.

So there's a place to start. Customer service is pretty good if you're doing the basics I've found... adding this, changing that. If you need a deeper issue corrected it's sometime...

Wow! You must have one of those "v-ray" phones that isn't blocked by silly things like mountains. Most people are stuck with plain old "radio waves" which can be stopped or bounced off of large objects. There's this thing called "radar" that works like that. In fact, during WWII some of the early radar systems used frequency bands that are close to what normal cell phones use today. But hey, with your magical "v-ray" phone you can still call 911 while being chased by zombies down in sub-basement nine!

I was going to ask before assuming that, but that would be a possibility. However, if they were former at&t and migrated to Cingular they would have to be on GSM.

Customer service only has access to reports of the towers so (big surprise) their information isn't always up to the minute. That can be true with any of us. The best thing to do is make a note of where and when this happens. The time of day, weather conditions, physical location (like an intersection), as well as direction of travel. An educated rep has ways of relaying this information to our field engineers. The problem may be a very odd problem with your account, but the only way to track it down is by these means.

I did go to a store about this back in early March. I was told it had to be an equipment problem and that they would be happy to sell me a new phone.

When I pointed out that my wife was having the same issue with her phone made by a different manufacturer they were of course happy to tell me they could sell me a new phone for her as well.

In short....going to the store was a waste of my time.

did you go to an actual Cingular store, or an agent (eg. Radio Shack, Best Buy, Wireless Express, etc)

I lived in Tulsa for 5 years, and know how spotty coverage is in the down-town/north Tulsa area. From about 41st street and north, the coverage was going down on a consistent basis (moved out of Tulsa in fall of '06).

If the true Cingular store was indeed a waste of time, then you may need to try another carrier.

Have fun trying.

huh . . . you might try different ones; I've had the same prob with Sprint corporate stores. The one just before 71st on Lewis has an ass for a manager, but the one by Woodland Hills mall out on 71st is great . . . maybe try the Cingular store on the corner of 71st and Memorial? that might give you different results. If you are being pissed on by an employee, speak with the manager. Sadly, bad service usually trickles DOWN, tho.

I work for Cingular and use a Sprint phone as my primary phone. Not because I don't like Cingular, but because it just doesn't work where I need it to work. I think you should try a different device to see if that improves your reception (i'm personally not a fan of the 6102 or the z525. I have used both and had horrible reception with each). If that doesn't help you do have 30 days to reverse your upgrade and possibly try out other carries to see if they work. Every carrier has some sort of trial period now so take advantage of that to find what works for you! 😁

it's most likely they are using more spectrum for 3G (broadband) in your area and expected more tdma/analog to have been cut down but didn't. it's happening in a few different markets where they have launched 3G, it will get worked out but once they have done it, it's harder to allocate more back to gsm.

You've had the same name for 4 years and Cingular has been Cingular for going on 10 years. Before T-Mobile was T-Mobile it was Voicestream for about 3 days and Powertel for about 3 days before that and something else before that. Which all adds up to J-U-N-K.
