Does mMode still work?

I have a pre-Cingular AT&T plan I don't want to get rid of and on the Cingular site it lets me add features like unlimited mMode for data. Would this still work? What if I got a new phone like the Blackjack?

The short answer... nope.

You would need ATT provisioned equipment to use Mmode. Getting Cingular equipment (Blackjack) would require changing to a Cingular plan with Cingular 'SOC' codes on your account. Even if you got a BlackJack third party, it is provisioned for the Cingular Media-net gateway.

Although, you are going to hear that it can be changed, hacked, reprogrammed, preprogrammed, updated, Firmwared, rewired, downloaded, uploaded, smacked, whipped, kicked and fuzzamatooed to work....

Thanks, I guess that leads me into a related question. I can get any unlocked phone and put my AT&T sim card in, right? Will these not work with data either?

The only brand of phones that you can succesfully do this with is Nokia.

on nokiausa.com you can send the mobile internet and MMS settings to any nokia phone for any major carrier.

I have done it countless times and it never fails.

Or you can get a Windows Mobile device. There is pretty much always a way to get correct data settings for any carrier on a WM phone/PDA.

Oh yeah I should have mentioned that I already have a Windows phone (the old Audiovox) and my next one will be Windows as well.

You can load the internet settings into practically any phone if you know what you're doing, it's just not always easy to find that info.

Speaking of AT&T plans, they're finally making the people in my market get off those $99.99 unlimited plans. 😈

What market are you in?

How did they notify people that they have to get off the plan?

I am on a family plan, 1200 minutes + 7:00 nights for $59.99. I am in Pittsburgh, PA. I have been hearing that Cingular will force me off as of Feb. '07 but my brother's company just issued everyone new phones with Cingular sims since they said the old ones will soon be useless.

I'm in the Dallas Market.

I think the dates vary a little. The one I had in most recently said she got a letter saying she had to switch off by December 19th, but February is what I've heard from other people around here. I'm just happy they're finally doing away with those unlimited plans.

You have the SMT5600? I am currently using that, too. It was unlocked but AT&T branded, so when we switched to Cingular I just downloaded the cab file to turn all my network settings right. eventually I just got up the courage to flash the ROM to the Cingular branded one. I highly suggest this if you are comfortable because it actually made my reception a little better and I've had less connection issues.
