GAIT plans and Nokia 6340i phone

I wondered if anyone out there happens to live in southern Missouri and subscribes to a GAIT plan from Cingular and also owns the Nokia 6340i? I currently have a Nation-wide TDMA plan along with a Nokia 5160 phone and get pretty good service. I'm just wondering how big a crap shoot it is to consider upgrading to one of the new GSM or GAIT plans & accompanying phones.

If I'm the only Missouri guy in the room, anyone that lives in a mostly rural area can answer my question, I'm sure. It's just that if you lived in southern Missouri, we could also probably share gripes about certain Cingular reps we've dealt with in person 😈

Thanks

Since GAIT uses GSM, TDMA and AMPS you should get the same, or better coverage as you do now(new towers, at least in my market, tend to be GSM only) if you change to a GAIT phone and plan. As far as GSM only goes in your area, I couldn't say what that looks like without a zip code. However, if you're looking to maximize your coverage and take advantage of GSM, then GAIT is likely your best bet. If everywhere you go is well serviced by GSM, you'll likely get more bang for your buck with a GSM only plan.

I'm in the 63701 zip code, Lord Gawkerbane. I've read the threads in the phones section, and it seems that people tend to think the 6340i is a kissing cousin to crap.

I guess, however, if you read enough about all phones, you're left with the conclusion they're all pieces of junk that should be dropped over Iraq or something ;-)

Thanks for your reply.

No problem. I honestly haven't seen too many problems with that phone myself. A lot of them I've seen have been related to either abuse or remorse that it isn't as shiny and feature laden as some GSM handsets. Maybe I just got lucky.

It looks like our GSM and TDMA coverage is pretty similar within a 50 mile radius of where you are. So the deciding factor of whether or not to go with GAIT is probably whether or not you want or need AMPS coverage.

If you go into a local store and ask, they should be able to show you the actual coverage map so you can make the best choice. Also, another thing to look at is if you go into analog roam anywhere where you use your phone. If not, then the difference between GAIT and GSM only should be mi...

I have the Nokia 6340i on a GAIT plan and really like it.

Keep in mind this is a plain old phone. No camera, no color screen, etc. Also, I have noticed while driving long distances, that if you are talking, sometimes the phone signal strength will go to zero and you will loose the call and then all of the sudden you'll have 5 bars again and you can still make a call. My local Cingular rep. explained that because this is a multi-network phone, there is no smooth switch between TDMA and GSM. He said the phone goes through what he likened to a reboot on a computer.

He also pointed out a cool way to know what mode the phone is using. I guess GSM has a "hold" feature while in a call and TDMA and analog do not - they only have a "mute" ...

We don't offer the Nokia 6340i anymore, at least (we here in our call center) and I don't think telesales has it either.

Some retail locations still have it in stock, as they haven't sold through their inventory of it yet, so there may be some to be had out there.

I see that as of today. I know a store (won't divulge their name so as to protect the innocent, haha) that still has the 6340i in stock. Would there be a constitutional crisis if I went in to sign up for this plan and asked for that phone?

if they still have it in stock, its beacuse they havent sold any in a while. once a store is out of them, they are out of them, they wont get any more in unless they transfer them from another store
