Why is my moms old nokia 3390 that only operates on the 900 mhz band has a better signal than alot of my current phones such as the (w600i,zx10)? I ask because im considering getting a phone using the 900mhz band.

I think you mean the 1900MHz. Are you in CA, NC, or SC?

In the very near future (if not already) those 1900 Mhz towers will become wholly owned by T-Mobile. Cingular uses 850 Mhz in most of Socal (the only area not 850 Mhz is Ventura County, the old ATTWS network was 1900 Mhz there). Cingular used to be 1900 Mhz in most of CA but they sold their share of that network to their partner T-Mobile when they purchased ATTWS.

In other words, you cannot get a 1900 Mhz only phone and expect it to work longer than a few months on Cingular's own towers.
