I guess everyone gets caught up in the hype!
Three or four years ago I bought a Nokia 6590i. It was a small phone, nothing special, but it worked well. Then after two years it got pretty worn down and a cracked screen. I purchased a SE T637, it was a great phone and sound quality was OK. I dropped the phone in water and got a replacement for $50.00. Then I broke the phone and Lock line could not replace the phone at all and they sent me a Moto V551. At first I wasn't used to the flip phone idea. The V551 just kept having problems with the speaker, I could rarely hear people, etc..
I was eligible for an upgrade and purchased the Razr V3 black and it sucked big time. So, I bought the RoKr E1. Although it was ugly, the phone ...

this is a very interesting story. sad as it sounds, older seems to work better. i agree with substance over style though. if the companies would stop worrying about whos phone looks better, their sales might actually go up and stay up instead of the return rate going up more than sales.

Every motorola phone of the v300 design had a flaw in it's manufacturing. Over time, the volume in the ear piece will decrease because it only relies on pressure from the internal aluminum frame to hold the cable up against the speaker. Why do we use aluminum? Because it's cheap and malleable (read bendable). I've fixed more of those than I can count, and I'm not even exaggerating when I say that number is well over 200.
They had the problem in the v300. It was in the v400. The 500 had it. The 551 had it. Did motorola ever redesign it? Nope. Every one of those phones used the same parts, and it's cheaper for them to continue to use them than to manufacture new ones.

Moto did redesign the speaker connection on the V551 - they replaced the elastomer with a spring contact and a stiffener.

I think we're talking about a different part. I'm talking about the part right behind the ear piece where the cable lies against it. I've never seen it done differently.

I just fixed another one no less than 2 minutes ago. They definitely all still have the same problem.
symptom: Customer walks in and says, "Whenever I talk to people on my phone I just can't hear them. I've got the volume turned all the way up but it doesn't help."
diagnostic: Squeeze the ear peice between your thumb and forefinger and press the keypad with your other hand. Don't squeeze it delicately. If the keypad tone is louder when squeezing the ear piece than when you let it go, the cable isn't getting contact with the speaker.
solution: Take the dang thing apart and bend the frame back into position, knowing full well that it will bend again in time but this will likely get them to their upgrade period so they can get o...

Yes we are talking about the same thing, look at a 557 and notice the difference - the elastomer (flexible rubber connector) has been replaced with a plastic spring contact and a hard plastic stiffener on the back of the ribbon/flex. I have replaced many of these (in and out of warr) and it does correct the problem.

i have the 6590i too! it was my first gsm phone and i will never give it up, its my trusty backup phone whenever my Nokia 6131 goes out or whichever one im using at the time. other than this 6131, the 6590 was my fav phone ever!

6682 is a great phone. I would look on ebay for one if I were you. I got mine for $180 and it is the best phone I have ever had and it has all the toasters and bells!! 🤤

I agree, I love my 6682. Nokia gave me mine over a year ago, and still no problems. Easily the best phone I've ever had. I won't get another phone till Nokia releases a series 60 3G device for the states.
I still have a 6200 at work, and a 6010 at home in case of emergency. Both get better reception than any other phone Cingular carries. (Other than my 6682)

I use the Nokia 6010 and it is the best phone as far as voice quality and signal. I had newer phones but the 6010 is excellent, oh and the 6200 is phenomenal too.

I have a nokia since 1996, with the exception of 3 motorolas in 2000. They replaced the first two Motos because they stopped working correctly within two months. and then three phones later and within one year went back to a nokia. I am on my fourth nokia in ten years (6230) and am very happy with it. Word of advice nokia works, they last long, they have great features if you are willing to pay, but why not they will last 3 years minimum. Push nokia's, people will bring them back less and and have fewer problems.

BTW (my 5160 still works after 7 years, it is deactivated but holds charge and theoretically could be used)

I like the look of the Razr and luckily in Bellevue, WA the voice and signal quality rock. They take my VZW E815 and make it look like the joke of the centry. Of course where I'm at VZW can't add towers due to the frequency they use and FCC blah blah..so their nearest tower to me is like 10-20 miles and not at full strength.
But yes..function over form works great..and provides better service.
