When will TDMA service be shut down?

My mom has an old Nokia 5165, and she heard that Cingular will no longer be allowing people to use TDMA handsets on the network. I know they don't sell GAIT plans or phones anymore, so they're definitely pushing people onto the GSM network... She also doesn't want to get rid of her phone. She's kind of old, and she's comfortable with what she has now...

I'm just curious if any of you guys had heard anything about a firm date.

There is no date. Cingular will leave the TDMA network operational for years, it's an overlay upgrade. Granted they're phasing out the TDMA, but it will most likely be a VERY long time to get everyone to switch over. Especially when you consider that the TDMA plans just recently stopped goin out the door.

Someone else may be able to tell you if they will renew your mother's TDMA plan when it comes to a close, but as for that one I don't know.

On a brighter note I've seen that Cingular has some very simple to use nokias for the GSM network if she's indeed forced to switch when her contract is up.

Besides if we just shut if off, the FCC would have us for lunch not to mention all the tdma customers still out there! 🤣

That's why in the conversion areas we are encouraging gsm upgrades to those customers who qualify now.

It's the exact same thing we're trying to do with analog...there really aren't many areas on our network that are analog anymore, and fewer people...so for the pasy couple years we've been trying to get people on updated calling plans and phone...but it's kinda like if someone wants to build a road and pays people to move, there is always that one old guy sitting on his front porch with the rifle that won't let his land go...

i personally think TDMA will quit once WCDMA comes in. cause all TDMA phones have analog. they prolly have to live with that. my old neighbor still uses a Ameritech CDMA phone for prepaid on there system that just relies on analog.
