Roaming outside of the U.S.

I will be traveling to the Cayman Islands next week and have a few questions about roaming with my Motorola V400.

I saw on Cingular's website that in the Cayman area, there are 2 carriers they have roaming agreements with. Do I get to choose which carrier or not? If so, how do I do that?

Also, does anyone know if my text messaging will work or not?

What about GPRS? Can I get on the Internet?

Thanks.

My understanding is that the phone seeks carriers, and that you can select from the ones it finds. It also can depend on the carrier's location to you. If one is very strong, the phone will default to that carrier.

Cingular supports international text messaging, so that shouldn't be a problem if the Caymans support it as well.

Were I at work I could pull up the Roaming data and give you full answers on GPRS. I believe the Caymans support it, but I am not 100% sure. Perhaps a Cingular rep who is at work right now can check it out for you.

The phone will pick up whichever is the stronger signal. both carriers there are the same roaming rate for any calls made, so it wouldnt matter whose you used.

my sheet says they use 900/1900 Mhz there, but it looks like its 850/1900. As far as GPRS goes, i don't think it should...

Thanks a lot for the information.

Do you know hom much does it cost to send and receive text messages?

I have the $2.99 package with 100 messages. Does it come off that or will it cost me more since I'm outside of the U.S.?

BTW, I'm in the Houston market.

So I called Cingular today and added the international roaming to my phone. I was told the roaming charge in the Cayman Islands is $1.49 per minute. According to the Cingular website, it should be $1.99 per minute. Which is it?

Anyway, the rep also added the International Calling Package for $3.99 a month. I was told with this package, I will only be paying $0.69 per minute of airtime and not the $1.49 he first told me.

I thought this pacakge I got is only for the long distance rate calling from the U.S. to other countries. Am I correct? $0.19 for Canada, $0.29 for Mexico, $0.69 for the Carribean, $0.39 for Europe, etc.

Can someone clarify this for me? Thanks.
