True or not true

I am thinking of switching to Cingular but do not want to be locked in a contract. A phone rep told me that if I bought the phone out right I could go month to month or pay as you go. Just wondering if it's to good to be true.

Preface: I realize this will bring the "down with the mighty evil empire" rant...but I'm just giving another piece of information:

When I walk into my local Wal-Mart or Sam's Club, I see phones with 3 prices. For example:

With 2 year contract = $50
With 1 year contract = $120
With no contract = $250

Correct! but be aware that if you don't get in a contract you will not get any promotional mintues... AKA (mobile to mobile minutes)

Or night and weekends!!! 😈 59.99 for 900 rollover minutes and no contract, what a deal!!! But hey! You can always add those feature back on for 9.99 extra a month each....so 900 minutes m2m and n+w = 79.99 plus taxes. WOW!! So not worth the hassle of no contract!!!

night and weekend minutes are not promotional minutes, so they are included. Only M2M are promo minutes.

This is how it goes down.

You can, but you will get a barebones plan without any Mobile to Mobile minutes. If you change your rate plan at all, and except any promotions (like m2m or maybe even Nights and weekends, I can't remember) then you will be entered into an automatic one year contract.

Honestly, I don't think the cost value makes it worth it. I would buy a phone at a 1 year retail price and get the mobile minutes. I mean, my GOD the retail price of those phones are so high it's almost like paying an early termination fee from the start, then you get a crappy plan to boot.

Isn't it incredable how rabid some of these commissioned salespeople get when you ask an honest question about making a purchase that might not allow them to maximize their commissions? Since I don't know even a single person I call regularly that is also on Cingular, the promo minutes have no value at all. On the other hand, being able to change carriers at will if not satisfied with the service, has great value.

especially if you are going to cingular, 9 times out of 10 you will need to use that freedom.
