Can you use a Sidekick/HipTop on Cingular?
i was under the impression that as long as you got an unlocked phone, or got an unlock code you could use a GSM handset on any GSM provider. my friend was looking into getting one and someone in Cingular Customer Care told him that he could use the voice, but not the data because the "imaging" was different. i know Care used to tell customers the same thing when we had the RAZR and T-Mobil didn't and then the story changed as soon as they got it as well.
i just don't want him to buy a phone that he can't use. any ideas for a proper replacement?

I have had several former T-Mo customers ask if they can use their Sidekicks on Cingular. Cingular customer care was right to say that the voice aspect will work.
In addition the text portion will work, as Cingular's text messaing is based on the SIM Card. However T-Mo locks the MMS and WIX menu, so there is no way to program this on Cingular's Media Net.
I used a T-Mo Moto a630 on Cingular for a couple of months. I found this out the hard way.

Hey in regards to this topic.. Im assuming since alot of cingular runs on 850mhz the sidekick wouldnt work SO great seeing as it doesnt even carry the 850 band.. am i correct in this assertation??

yeah, that would be a pretty safe bet. apparently since it doesn't carry the 850 band the reception wouldn't be that great.
