If someone steels a cell phone, or if someone looses a phone and someone else sticks a sim card in it and uses it, is it the IMEI number thats used to locate that phone anyplace in the world?

its possible for people or companies to locate a lost/stolen phone if someone else is using their sim card in it correct?

No, what is tracked is the ICCID#, the serial # for the sim card, the only reason carriers have the IMEI is for insurance and warranty purposes, but other then that no.

Yes, it is possible to track down an IMEI.

Simply put the terrorist caught in Spain, Italy and England were tracked down by a combination of IMEI and SIM information.

Fact is that companies have specific departments and personnel to do such tasks but are not available to the public or even lower rank employees within the company such as customer care reps and annexed departments like supervisors, managers, and technical.

Succintly put! Can be done, however tracking a lost phone does not (in the mind of the company) warrant use of those resources...
