As a Cingular blue customer I think this is a very savvy decision. Don't flame me, just my opinion.

Wow. Not sure what to think about that. I think they should keep it Cingular if you ask me. I can see reasons to do both though.

Perception issue(s)... Kind of like if you're on a beach, get enough people involved and you can convince the others that the sea is purple...

I never noticed any customer service issues with Cingy when I was a reseller...

You misinterpreted the announcement. Cingular is not Rebranding. SBC is rebranding to AT&T. Cingular Wireless will remain Cingular Wireless.

Did you read the article?
"Whitacre said AT&T might still use the Cingular name in some markets. But the overall plan, he said, is to use the AT&T name to market all the company's products — local, long-distance, wireless, data and video."

Yea I read it, but this is hardly Ed's call. Furthermore we just spent millions rebranding ATTWS to Cingular. Only time will tell.

When has that ever stopped any company from doing this? It's a cost of doing business and likely can be written off as a business expense.

If that is not Ed's call, then whose is it???? Ed is the Chairman and CEO of the 60% owner of Cingular. He can do whatever he wants. And the article also said that BellSouth had no objection to the change. So it sounds like a done deal to me.

Indeed, BellSouth Mobility never had a problem. There were talk a long time ago of a merge or potential buy-out of AT&T Wirless & BSM because of the similar technology paths and business models they were both planning...

actually, if he wanted it bad enough, and had support on the board, they would just replace sigman with someone that wouldn't have a problem with it, if indeed sigman does have a problem with it.

It's still gonna confuse the hell out of customers...

You evidently didn't see this in one of the early paragraphs of the article:

"Whitacre said AT&T might still use the Cingular name in some markets. But the overall plan, he said, is to use the AT&T name to market all the company's products — local, long-distance, wireless, data and video."

"AT&T *might* still use the cingular name in some markets." This implies that the name of the wireless company for the most part will be AT&T (or as they're saying to be trendy at&t.)

It's nice to know that the company (whatever it's calling itself this week) has plenty of extra money to re-badge themselves every few years. One advantage though is that no one will be confused if they're dealing with a wireless communications company or something to relieve a stuffy nose 🙂
Oh, and it's nice that the ad geeks think lower case is so "internet trendy." Next thing ya know at&t's spokesperson will be wearing baggy pants that are about to f...

I cant believe BellSouth is letting SBC/at&t throw it's weight around like this 😡. This is ridiculous that it seems as if SBC just does whatever it wants. BELLSOUTH STANDUP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 👿

I think BellSouth is probably becoming alarmed at the rapid growth and threat of Verizon so they'll probably stay quiet on re-branding. Alot can be said of a larger consolidated company which has the same brand for local, long distance, internet and wireless, and not to mention the fact that BellSouth itself will probably eventually merge with SBC/AT&T even though it has resisted that so far.

I have mixed opinions of this announcement. Not until Cingular took over AT&T, did I ever hear a customer say one thing GOOD about AT&T but we all know how that goes. 🙄

I think SBC realizes that Verizon has made some smart decisions within the past month or so, therefore they feel as if they need to go back to the proverbial drawing board before Verizon oversteps.

One thing that would upset me as a Cingular employee, as I work for an agent, I called my account executive this morning, shocked as we all were when we opened up phonescoop.com and read the article, he was shocked as well. Being with the company for 8 years as he, I would have been annoyed.
Gotta love corporate world 😉

There's my 2 cent worth!

Ah, just put him in a storm trooper suit. It seems the mighty death star (AT&T logo) is trying to make a comeback. Does this make the ceo now Lord Stan? 😁

The AT&T name was good in some aspects, but wireless was never their strong suit. Cingular spent a lot of money trying to rebrand the AT&T name, now they are switching back to it. I think this will confuse the customers.

Wireless was AT&T's strong point, until they decided to give away the farm. Before the major merger that created Verizon, there was not a carrier close to the number of customers that AT&T had. So you can't say wireless was not their strong point.

i agree.

ATT was a great name, but ATT WIRELESS was not.

i think it is best just to make a whole new name and to start fresh.. (cingular will always have a bad brand image if they keep the name) i think it is best to switch.. all though it will be millions of dollars to change the name with marketing, and products, it will be good to start fresh.

A longtime Cing blue customer, I feel the same. a very savvy decision.

People here in CO are more confident with ATTWS rather than a newcomer (but common in south USA and eastern USA) Cingular.

I've asked several people today already if they trust ATTWS over cingular or cingular over ATTWS? The majority stated ATTWS. Many of which have been 'forced' migrated to orange.

I like the decision, I think SBC will too.

okay not a huge fan of either Cingualr or at&t, but i totally trust at&t better than Cingualr. i think its kind of stupid that they just spent so much money remodeling old at&t stores into Cingualr stores just to turn them back? and didnt Cingualr reprogram every at&t tower to display "Cingular" on the phone(im not sure if that cost money, but mt AT&T phone says Cingular all the time.) it should be a great marketing tool, i think i majority of people liked the at&t name and brand better than Cinuglar. This is going to confuse the hell out of customers... here's an example..

cust: My phone isn't working..
rep: ok, you have an att phone, you'll need to migrate to a new att plan, and get a new phone.
cust: why do I have to get a new plan? i have an att phone, and am getting an att phone?
rep: they are new phones, won't work with your old phone.
cust: what are you talking about? they are both att?
rep: your on the old att billing system, you have to move to the new att billing system(former cingular system)
cust: ...
