Cingular Vs T-Mobile

I need some quick advice. I am getting ready to either renew my contract with Cingular or switch to T-mobile. My issue is with coverage I travel alot but most of my travels take me to California(both Southern and Northern),Colorado, and Massachusetts. I live in Texas. Can somebody out there offer there opinion on the quality of service(making and receiving calls) in these areas? Its not that I'm unhappy with Cingular, But I have a good friend who just went to work for T-Mobile and is asking me to make the switch. I currently use the Treo 650 which sucks as a phone but its a great PDA, He has offered me the Blackberry 7105T for 149.99. Is the Blackberry a good unit? I know that phone quality is usually an individual preference, but I have nev...

Cingular is very strong in Texas, as I'm sure you already know from living there. Cingular and T-Mobile's network in California used to be one in the same. Now that Cingular has it's own network (AT&T's) there, they have great coverage plus the continued agreement with T-Mobile for the next four years so reception should never be a problem. As for Colorado, don't expect T-Mobile to have better coverage than any other national player there, especially Cingular, because T-Mobile is not concerned with covering less populated areas/states. Finally, as far as Massachusettes goes, Cingular is going to have you covered because the Northeast is Cingular's strongest region.

Basically what I'm trying to tell you is that wherever you have had cov...

If you really want to know the VS coverage go into a store.. and ask a Rep to pull up a few of your main travel areas in the MTi Map tool. Not only will he be able to show you coverage as small as a 1 mile radius, but will be able to show you roaming partner coverage. T-Mobile does not have roaming agreements with anyone that Cingular does not. And with no roaming fees on Cingular.. there really is no comparison.

As for the Blackberry, stick with your treo or get the new iPaq or wait for the HTC Wizard which will be coming out VERY soon (The SX66 just got the hatchet on friday). Blackberrys are horrible glorified pagers. They suck as phones, and have the most terrible limited functionality. Its a PDA for dummys. Treo vs. Blackberr...

All of the other responses were right on the mark with the T-Mobile comparison, but the Blackberry deserves a little more credit than some have given. If you want flashy, stay Treo as it has camera and a great internet browser but is not amazing beyond these features. The Blackberry is a much better device for email and reception with "grown-up" functionality It actually has a great address book and calendar organizer and syncs VERY quickly/easily with major mail programs on your PC.

I have to agree with you, The t-mobile rep let me have the Blackberry 7105T to use for the weekend, No strings attached!!!! It is a great unit. The reception was just fine, and using the OS for contacts and calendar was excellent. I will say the Treo650 had additional functions possibly overkill for what I needed, But the whole reason for me leaving VZW in the first place was because of all the issues i have with the 650, if it wasn't for the phone continuously resetting(even replacement unit had the same problem) I would have stuck it out with VZW.
This is why I asked Cingular Vs T-mobile. I have had the Blk Razr now for almost 20 days and it has been great, Though I only had the BB 7105T for 2 days I too love it. What shall I do? I'm t...

I use Cingular and my neighbor uses T-Mobile and we are both in the northeast. There are countless times when he is asking to use my phone because his does not have service. Cingular offers much more coverage. They are the obvious choice.

They are not the obvious choice if T-Mobile works better for you in your location. You seem to be under the impression that reception is equal for everyone in all situations. I'm really sad to tell you this, but it ain't so. Generalizations are just that generalizations.

This person stated that they are going to do alot of travelling, and one of their destinations is the Northeast. Based on my experience (my neighbor has T-Mobile and I have Cingular), I have to say that Cingular is decidedly better than T-Mo in the northeast. I constantly have service where my neigh...

This may, of course, have as much to do with the phone as with the service.

Perhaps some time when your neighbor is asking to use your phone, you should offer to allow him, but to use his sim card.... I notice significant differences with t-mobile when I had a Samsung N107 compared to the Nokia. I also notice fairly significant (ie, should be noticiable to the average person) difference between my wife's Cingular phone and my own Cingular phone. For example, sitting here at my computer, my phone is usually at 3-4 bars, my wife's at 1-2. However, on our couch 15 feet away, the situation is reversed.

My experience then, would show that the phone matters at least as much as the carrier when it comes to reception.

That theory would work well, if both phones weren't RAZR's. We have the exact same phone, mine is just the Cingular version and his is the T-Mobile version.

When I switch to my S710a, well, that's just not fair. 🤣 🤣

I am not as keen on the slimmer versions of the Blackberry as the full QWERTY keyboard really is an essential to me and go hand-in-hand with heavy email! I recommend one of two options: 7290 (I personally carry) or 8700c (when it arrives, no eta). I am not very impressed with our 7100g as the user interface (menu navigation) is more difficult and the keyboard is too phone-like for my taste (and fast emails!). T-Mobile's coverage network really is their only downfall (it is very small), they have great plans, and a reputation for awesome customer service.

By the way, I carry a Nokia 6010 as well and my Blackberry is as good or better than the Nokia in reception!

I haven't had a problem with my t-mobile or cingular in socal/norcal. My cingular coverage when I went to boston & surrounding areas last year was excellent. I didn't have t-mobile then so I couldn't tell you about that.

I work for Cingular, and it's not all it is cracked up to be. They treat their employees poorly, so I'm thinking about leaving for another carrier. I say give another carrier a try and if you don't like it, you can return the phone withing the trial period.
