How important is this phone?

As everyone knows (or at least should know) the Firefly came out on Cingular. At first I thought, "Smart Move" but now i'm wondering why parents would buy this, when a 6010 is free.

and if the kids have the capability to use it as a normal phone, the parents can save cash and cut the home phone and move their plan higher with cingular. I dunno if its a shot in the foot or not, please share your opinion.

How often do you get a customer whose child/teenager has run up a HUGE bill. Now that $49.99 phone that limits those bills looks pretty good.

That's what I was thinking. I think this is what my sister would have bought for my niece if it had been available. Basically you choosing who you child can call and basical overall usage of the phone without having to be there the whole time.

With locks, you can do this with nearly any phone, though. My v505, for example, can be locked so that without the password, you can only call the first 10 numbers in the phone book....by controlling the password, you can control the phonebook...

On the other hand, for smaller kids it could be useful, becuase they don't have to understand all about the "other" things the phone can do...

That's part of the point. This phone would have been perfect for my niece. She didn't need a phone with any features, just one to call my sister.

Yea, I think the idea is to limit who your children call--be it to control overages or for more parental reasons. There's definately a market for it.

Also, I wouldn't be surprised, with holiday season coming and all, that you can get this phone for free or actually earn money through various rebates.

yea it's a very smart move on cingular's part, but they should do some national advertising to get draw those customers that have been holding off on a phone for their kids...

It's not a shot in the foot because they may not have had those customers(kids) if it was status quo.
