MEdia Net or internet?

UnrealTechno

Ok, so this should be easy for any cingular employee to answer. I have media net and typed into my phone's browser (for example) apple.com Will this charge me extra or does it just use up my media net? My friend works at cingular and assured me that it would only use my media net, but she's pretty stupid, so I thought I'd run it past you guys.

MEdia Net = Internet in your cell phone.
You use it = You use kilobytes.
You use kilobytes = you get charged.

If you have a MEdia Net package, you'll only get charge if you go over your MB.

So they don't care where you surf, just how much?

if they cared where you surfed, they would restrict the ability of your phone's browser to go there.

In fact, of course, most web sites don't work well on cell phone browsers; google has a cell phone version, which also attempts to translate other sites for you--with varying degrees of success, I would point out-- but other than that, you never really know.

My Tmobile phone was "locked" and you could only go to certain sites. Others I know on various carriers have the same thing, even on cingular. My current cingular phone (v505) is not locked, I can go to the browser menu, select GoTo, and type in any address I want.

Exactly. We don't cripple our phones like that... WhoTF do you think we are? Verizon??? 🙄

Sorry to burst your bubble, but some of the people I have talked to that have been unable to "break out" of the phone's internet are on Cingular...so some of the phones are "crippled"... granted it could be the phone manufacturer crippling the phone, But IIRC, one of the phones was the v551, which is also motorola, and it could NOT access google, for example, whereas my v505 can. Both phones from the same manufacturer, which would argue against a manufacturer issue....

Not all phones can access the same sites due to technical constrains (OS).

😕 i don't know what your talkin about but my v551 allows me to go to google all the time with no problem. in fact i even get free pics and free ringers (just poly's though 😡 )from google. i like it just a teeny bit better than the yahoo but that where my email reigns at. 😎

maybe a different software version, or maybe my recollection is cloudy or maybe the person i was talking to didn't know you can use your browser's menu to break out of the media.net interface...

My tmobile Nokia 32-whatever it was (3210?) you couldn't break out.

cellularman2006 saying:

wow brother!!!!!!!!!!!thats obscure u called your friend "stupid". i'm going to assume she works in a call center and was hired as a "temp" employee" and just has nice customer service but knows nothing about phones. if she sell phones and she's as stupin as you say the she will most likely be fired soon.

other than that as a side note you should not mention your friend being stupid and working at cingular in the same story let along sentence. espically in the cingular forum.

there is enough cingular bashing going on here.

thanks

However stupid you friend may be, she is right...going to particular HTML or HDML sites on your device will simply charge data based on your plan. As someone mentioned earlier some phones wont allow you to go to certain sites due to device constraints. If you connect your device to a laptop using it as a modem the charges may be different or far greater data usage than you would ever use from your phone. Enjoy

Alright, well I wasn't on here to bash someone, though I find myself teaching her a lot about cell phones. Anywho, I appreciate for the reassurance, I just didn't want to be surprised with a huge bill in a few weeks. Awesome, thanks guys
