Where is it? 20 cities by the end of the year? Well it is the end of the year almost, anyone got any news or what to expect?

It's really not the end of the year. Q4 just started ten days ago, so there's still a good two and a half months to make any announcements.

Don't underestimate Cingular when it comes to rolling out this new network. When it comes to things like that Cingular doesn't mess around. I have a feeling that we're going to be seeing HSDPA in a lot more cities than the promised 20 by the end of the year. 🙂

I'm not sure whether or not it will be in the initial rollout of HSDPA or not, but I'm almost guaranteeing you that we'll be one of the first forty cities and surrounding areas to have it. Pittsburgh is a huge market for wireless communications, and especially data. I don't think Cingular is going to delay the opportunity to delve into the huge pockets that Pittsburgh holds for the wireless data market.

Another thing to reference is the first cities that Verizon's EVDO network was made available in. The Pittsburgh area was one of the first that EVDO was offered.

I can't help but thinking back to when the majority of the area was experiencing an "outage", which very well could have been Cingular technicians upgrading the local towers...

There was only one outage in the area (that I know of) since the merge. I talked about it breifly before and you did indeed say that you were out of town.

Oh, I thought you were talking about a separate outage.

I really hope you're right RUFF, because if it heading the same way PTT is going, we may not see 3G until mid 2006.

Cingular takes it's time to get things right, but they don't waste time either. When they started rolling out GSM they finished the entire network overlay more than six months prior to their projected completion date.

Networks and features are two entirely different locations on the list of priorities for Cingular.

When it comes to what gets done first, Cingular focuses on improving the network first (and quickly once they get going). Then all the extra things like PTT will eventually come together.

Right now Cingular's focus is on integrating the multitude of networks they have and upgrading it as they go. PTT isn't nearly as important to customers as the network itself is.

Salt Lake City is getting it so if other areas are bigger, you'll probably have it. And Salt Lake City is in the middle of th Rockies. For those that can't put it all together, this means the mountains are going to block a lot of potential use. And since that is the case, expect it to go plenty of places quick.

Hopefully Cingular will upgrade their own towers in areas where they hold a large presence.

Any idea of a launch date for UMTS/HSDPA?

first 20 are by Jan 1. they're starting a trend of turning towers on before the deadline so some may have them up by early december. I know there are towers in the salt lake area completely ready to go, the just need the go-ahead call. expect the towers to expand to 40-50 cmajor cities by about April.

Acually Cingular is ahead of this pace. 40 cities by the end of 2005 I know which ones but I cannot say.

That's Cingular for ya. I think it's great how quickly and efficently they can roll out an entire new network. I would have been really surprised if the city count remained at the estimated 20 cities.

FOR FORSYTH:

I definitely believe that the Pittsburgh area will be one of the first to recieve HSDPA in the initial rollout now that we know for sure Cingular will be rolling it out in around 40 cities.

This information is awesome. Now I just have a problem. I will HAVE to buy a new phone when this rolls out (I have this problem where I must have the newest thing out) and I am not eligible for an upgrade until December of 2006. Damn!!! 😈

Ruff, It really shouldn't be hard to figure out where they will be rolling it out. Like Verizon's initial rollout of EVDO look for cities where they have approx. 35 Mhz of spectrum avaliable, and (I am just guessing here) at least 10Mhz of 1900(PCS) spectrum (to actually deploy WCDMA/HSDPA in). Using this criteria Pittsburg makes the cut (25 Mhz 850 and 10 Mhz 1900).

My only qustion for SimplyMarcus is, if I am on track with my reasoning here: Will New Orleans make the intial cut? Or did Katrina ...

I can only say is that New Orleans will not be one of the intial cities. Katrina caused so much damage that most of the foucs is trying to get downtown New Orleans back of service. New Orleans is about 75-80% percent back on service.

I figured as much. If they are back to 75-80% back, that is impressive and says a lot about Cingular's repair teams. My neighborhood got about 6 feet of water and looks like proverbial war zone/3rd world trash dump I can just imagine what the techs must be battling with.

my heart and prayers go out to all of the people down in that region and their loved ones who passed away.

a lot of companies are doing everything they can to restore everything from power to cell phone to getting the refineries up and running and to saving lives... keep it up!!

It is tough because a lot of damaged cell sites techs cannot reach. Customers are experiencing a lot of dropped calls right now due to a lot of hand off. A lot of dead zones. Hopefully your family and friends are ok and you guys are in my prayers. I used to live in Louisiana in Baton Rouge and I visited New Orleans and I love that city.

You will know soon. I can not answer if your particular city is going to be part of the initial 3g roll out. I cannot tell u when PTT is going to launch. I can just tell u what u can already read in articles that are public knowledge. And Even if you guess right I cannot confirm that you are right. If you ask me about future Cingular plans don't be annoyed if I am vague on purpose. We all have signed agreements with the companies we work for not to talk about inside information. I will give my opinion in this forum or state personal experiences. I will not give product release dates.

all of a sudden over the past few days I am suddenly 'roaming' in my home area (New York City, Manhattan, West Village) and i've called the Cingular techs four times since Sunday. I keep getting the 'integrating towers' stall. I think this is imminent (3G rollout of wcdma and hspda), because they integrated the AT&T towers long ago. My thing is when are the new 3G phones coming....

Our regional Cingular Rep , said projected date was Mid November, but said probably closer to first of the year.

I know Houston, Dallas are in the Top 20 Cities that are going to get it supposedly before year end.
