Need help from a Cingular rep or someone who knows...

After some thorough investigating, I decided to purchase an unlocked Nokia 6681. I currently have service with CIngular and am just switching my SIM card over to the new phone. My problem is, I'm really hyped about the new PTT service Cingular is getting, and I know they are launching 2 new phones--but I'm really not impressed with either one. My 6681 has the PTT capability. Please tell me I'll be able to use my phone with the new service???

You might be able to use the phone. But you will not be able to use PTT. Nokia made that phone with a PTT format that Cingular is not using. Cingular is doing PTT over voice and the nokia 6681 is made to do PTT over data.I also would be concerned over any phone on Cingular that does not use the 850mhz band.

Please explain further---eek! I don't understand the BAND thing. The phone showed up as a Cingular product! I read where Nokia tested their PTT service with ATT-which is now CIngular. I just don't understand the techie stuff. I would think it would work with whoever it was serviced with? Please don't tell me I've wasted $400!!

the 6681 is the European version of the phone - meaning it has not 850 Mhz band, which is primarily what Cingular uses nationally. In some areas, 1900 Mhz only will work fine, but if you travel you'll have problems. the 6682 is the US version with the 900 Mhz replaced with the 850 Mhz.

The PTT that was being tested last year was PTT over GPRS, but Cingular decided to go with the Kodiak platform, which was a much better decision based on initial performace. the phones that are "PTT ready" are PTT ready over GPRS. The Kodiak platform requires additional software to be loaded to the phone.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. ☚ī¸

Sheesh, this is really upsetting. They've already shipped the phone, so I can't even cancel my order. Is it possible to get the additional software needed?? I feel like an idiot now. Why can't everyone use the same damn technology?!?! lol

i don't quite remeber the reasoning behind the different freq. in north america vs. europe/asia.

adding the software MAY be possible in the future, since i read on Kodiak's site that the PTT application could possibly be deployed as a Symbian application, but no word on that as of now.

adding 850mhz won't happen, it's a hardware thing.

I've been looking on cnet, and it seems like I should still be able to use the phone with 900 mhz. It says: "if you frequently travel overseas, for example, a tri- or quad-band GSM phone will do the trick; look for GSM 900/1800/1900 or GSM 850/900/1800/1900 when shopping for a world phone." I also saw a post on another site where a girl had bought a 6681 under Cingular's service. I will look again, but thanks for your help.

Thannah4 I know you want to believe soooooooo badly that your phone will work WELL on Cingulars network đŸ˜ĸ BUT it's NOT going to happen do to the fact that a GOOD portion of Cingulars network is 850. What they were saying on CNET is TRUE, BUT it's only true in the sense that over seas they use 900/1800 and here in the states we use 850/1900, with cingular being of all major carriers (if not all, someone correct me if I'm wrong, the only one) who uses 850 in the GSM realm. So you see darling, the best piece of advice I can give is get your money back, get a 6682 and THEN get it unlocked!!!!!!!!! 😎

Nokia 6620 has PTT capabilities over GPRS as long is unlocked/unleashed and simply with an unlimited MediaNet package.

Talk to the internet for more details.

Where did you buy the phone? If they advertised it for Cingular that was very misleading at best.

It was advertised as a cingular product on several sites, but I called the rep to make sure, and they told me all I needed to do was switch my SIM card over and it would be fine.

Then I would tell them to give you a refund w/o giving you any grief.

Good luck!

Well, I spoke with the people that sold me the phone and they told me to go ahead and refuse shipment from Fed-Ex and they will give me a refund minus a 20% restocking fee. Because it costs that much to put something back on the shelf! HAHA! But, I guess I'm okay to eat that since I was silly enough to order a phone without doing the proper research. I've learned so much on this forum. Thanks to everyone who helped me out with advice!! Oh, and one last thing-Can anyone suggest or refer me to some decent phones from Cingular? How nifty is the RaZR v3? hAHA!

not saying the phone won't necessarily work, it all depends on where you are. But without the 850Mhz, you will be pretty limited on where it will work. quad band would be ideal, since it will work in any GSM country worldwide, but nokia doesn't make a quad band, at lea...

That is very misleading. The 6681 will not work optimally on the Cingular network as it is missing the GSM850 band which is the main band that Cingular uses in the USA.

That site also says that the phone has the WCDMA2100 band, which I cannot find anywhere on the Nokia website that it is WCDMA compatible.

I would advise returning the phone that you purchased and buying the 6682 if you wish to use it on Cingular's network. You shouldn't have any problem returning it based on the false advertisements and general vagueness of that website.

I called and spoke to a cingular rep that told me I should just refuse the package from Fed-Ex, since I haven't received it yet. My thing is, if I refuse the package, how hard will it be to get my refund?

It shoudln't be hard at all. If you tell the fed-ex driver to return it to the sender, then there shoulnd't be any problems at all.

At least not if you paid by a credit card. Because, if the charge shows up, you just need to dispute it due to rejecting the shipment. Just make sure you get the driver to give you something acknowledging that you refused the shipment.

It's not getting connected that's going to be a problem for you... it's the fact you will only have service in half the places you go... if that.... being that 850 is Cingulars prefered frequency

What... What is that you say Nextel18.... you would just ptt them if they're in one of the Nextel partners areas!? Very good... you got me... NOT đŸ˜ŗ ... HOW THE HE** ARE YOU GOING TO PTT THEM, IF THEY'RE IN A sprint customer!? 😛 The fact of the matter is, that you all are used to sub-standard service and not having M2M to ALL you're beloved sprint/nextel brethren simply proves it! 😉

When using an unlocked phone with Cingular, make sure it supports both 850 GSM and 1900 GSM. Cingular uses both frequencies.
