Well i just purchased a v600 from ebay for a pretty good deal. The guy said its not unlocked but he can do it for another $30. Now my question is if the phone is quad band would I even need to unlock and it was originally from at&t wouldnt that also mean that i dont need it unlocked since cingular and at&t have merged. Please correct me if im wrong id rather not spend another $30 on unlocking it if I dont need to.

Simple answer: YES get the phone unlocked.
Long answer: The quad band capability has nothing to do with a locked phone. Locking a phone just means that only X brand of sim card will work in the phone, where an unlocked phone will take any sim card (t-mobile, cingular, at&t). And cingular has not PURCHASED at&t yet (it's not a merger, cingular is going to buy at&t), that probably won't happen until 4th quarter so they are far from being the same company yet.

I purchased it for $320 plus shipping and some insurance. It came with original packaging as its never been used only opened to unlock and also came with travel charger and headset (not bluetooh i dont believe). From other auctions that i saw i found this one very reasonable. It was originally priced at $350 but I was able to talk the guy down on the buy it now price.

Good question cingular has a policy that you can upgrade your phone every 21 months. But after 12 months of good payment and one line genrating 75.00 a month average you are elgible at 12 months. IF you just have one year with a good payment historey and you do not spend more than 75.00 per month on one line than you can qualify for an exception upgrade. The exception means a two year contract extersnion but getting the phone at one-year pirce.

Well per our protocol training a customer service rep can only do an upgrade if "The customer is out of contract (regardless of length of service)", "The customer has completed 21 or more months of service since the last handset discount", or "The customer has completed 12 or more months of service since the last handset discount AND has ARPU of $75 or more over the last three months". ARPU is actually the amount that would be paid on a bill excluding overage but including monthly service and any feature packages divided by the number of lines on the account. So if I had a family talk plan with 3 lines and bill (without overage) averaged $100/month I would have an ARPU of $33 per line and not meet the required $75. Exception:
- If the c...

If you have completed one year of your contract call cingular customer care at 1866-cingular or 611 from your cell phone.

A combined cell phone bill of $80 means an average of $40 per line.

There is very little option for a 1-month old phone getting upgraded.

HOWEVER, your mother's phone may be eligible for upgrade (if she kept her old phone when you got your new one). Perhaps she'd be willing to get an upgrade, and then the two of you could switch SIM cards and go.
