Tower Location

mlx52

Sep 5, 2005, 10:03 PM
Is there a way to request a tower placement. My one son goes to school in North Carolina, and cannot get any reception on campus (in the buildings). There are 4 Verizon towers on campus, however, I really don't want open a whole Verizon account for him. Is there a way to contact Cingular about this issue?

Thanks

If the dorm is a wireless internet dorm that will disrupt GSM service. The same thing happened to my sister, and switching to Verizon is probably his best bet.

Thank you, I was gonna jump at that too. My wireless systems doesn't interfere with my GSM phones (T-Mo and Cingy) at all.

The wireless systems at dorms are about 100 times more powerful than the ones people would have at home. Not to mention they broadcast the wireless waves instead of using directional antennas.

Obviously has no clue to what he's talking about. Far from being an engineer at high school level. Now to make a suggestion . . . have you ever heard of prepaid phones? No contract or anything.

I'm a network engineer and can tell you this guy is flat out wrong about WiFi interfering with GSM. And the "wireless systems at dorms" are not 100 times more powerful, that would be illegal and the FCC would be down on that faster than George 'putting food on his family' Bush can drop another bomb on Iraq.

By the way moron, your claim has as much merrit as this claim: The wind effects how well my microwave pizza cooks. Different spectrum. as a matter of fact, the FCC mandates these devices do not disrupt eachother. Why is the world I live in so dumb...hippies...

I've installed wireless systems at CSUN, USC, UCLA, and Berkeley. I think maybe I know what I'm talking about. In fact I've seen my own GSM phone work fine, and then get dramatically worse when I power on the wireless system.

Wireless internet is 802.11b and 802.11g which are 2.4 GHz. Even the new 802.11a is 5.8GHz. GSM is from 900MHz-960MHz. Not the same.

It doesn't have to be the same, but it's powerful enough to disrupt GSM.

So, you're saying that the GSM 802.11b wireless iPAQ h6340 and the MDAIII cellular phone/pdas are so powerful that they disrupt service for all surrounding GSM phones? You're funny.

All I know is this.... A few years ago when we installed the wireless system for CSUN it was done over spring break. When the students came back we were flooded with calls about phones not working, and they were all Cingular. When we did the same for ASU we got complaints that Voicestream (Tmobile) phones weren't working, and I've seen my own phone lose reception when powering these wireless devices on.

I hate Verizon by the way.... they nickel and dime their customers for stupid things.

Sure. Better contact the FCC, then.

Where exactly in the ANSI/IEEE Std 802.11 standard is this GSM/802.11 conflict listed? What page? Are you even aware that 802.11b/g is a low-power solution and has a short range (about 100 feet)??

Usually Thwy will gladly spend 60,000 so you can call a 39.99 rate plan user. Seems like a cost effective way to drive a business into the ground.

every other add on this site is for a reception amplifier. He could use that in his dorm, to benefit of others too, and keep it with him wherever he goes. Problem solved.

If you want something that benefits others, you need an amplifier/repeater not just an amplifier.
