My Question is does this stop the $18 "upgrade" fee for existing Orange customer's or is it just for the Blue ones?

That seems a little unfair, not to mention in time we are going to hear, "But they didm't charge me an $18 fee last time!" From the old Blue Customer's

It is not really a migration fee. I am glad we are waiving it for now. The 18.00 Upgrade Fee is only changed when one wants to get new equip at a subsidized price and signs a contract. Part of the standardized upgrade procedures.

Oh, I see. Well they have been saying migration fee after migration fee so that is why I thought it was, but why are you telling me differently? (Out of curiosity)

is this just consumers? shouldn't we all do this at the same time so as not to confuse custs if they end up talking to more than one rep? i'm in beuc and we are still charging BUSINESS cust's migration fees which seems rediculous.

Here's a portion of the email I received this morning :

Please note effective July 8, 2005 Cingular will no longer charge the $18 equipment upgrade fee for customers migrating from "The Former Att Wireless" to "The New Cingular Wireless".

I hope we get that here soon. I never thought the migration fee was "fair" but oh well. Actually I can almost understand it from TDMA to cingular, because there has always been an "upgrade" fee to go to the new system, but lately tdma has been CRAP. but anyways, I just hope we get that here soon.

I got that email as I was doing two migrations and it surprised the hell out of me. After talking them into the upgrade fee, they were excited to suddenly save $36. Sure enough, when the contracts printed up it had $0.00 instead of $18.00 so it's definitely true.

I surprised they're doing it, but I guess they REALLY want people off the ATT billing system. I wish they'd kept things fair across the board to all of our current and potential clients.

The whole point of the migration fee was that it is pretty much the same thing as the upgrade fee. Cingular charges existing customer's $18 to upgrade their service. So we charged AT&T customers $18 to basically "upgrade" their service. The only difference being that an AT&T customer could get a lot earlier upgrade than existing cingular customers due to having to migrate. It think the fee was fair. We could have charged them the $36 activation fee that new customers pay, you know.

I think the fee was more than fair, but I see their point in changing things.

The long winded brief on the subject was that they're offering the waived fee because switching over reduces operating expenses. So even though they're losing money by waiving the fee, they're also saving money by removing one of their expenses. It probably balances out somewhere, and I have no doubt this will sway a lot of the remaining former AT&T customers into migrating.

Yeah.. it was totally fair.

Former ATT customers were SUPPOSED to be getting charged a 15$ upgrade fee for close to a year! And that's on any phone even if they were staying with GSM. That's exactly what the 18$ upgrade fee was for. Only problem was we could almost always find a way to waive it. And at first a lot of us just sorta, you know, 'forgot' to add the charge.

I think they changed it because of that USA today article, and if that's true, then I'm pissed that faulty and biased journalism actually made a difference. Now people will think that the info in that article was correct because it made cingular change their ways.

Or maybe I'm just looking for something that isn't there. I mean, I really do hate journalism and the me...

Personally I feel that cingular should have a software upgrade for blue GSM customers instead of having to buy an orange device. It would make so many customers happy, or to just unlock the things for them. If you migrate you phone gets unlocked or software upgrade would be good for customers.

Since those phones were made by the manufacturers for AT&T Wireless is Cingular actually allowed to unlock the handsets? There may be some legality to the situation.

Oh I know just I am thinking of the customer. But since Cingular now owns ATT it may be different. Since I am not in Legal on the topic and what agreements there are on it I am not completely sure. I just like to see customers get a break on this. After all apparently on the orange side they can get the phone unlocked once they meet certain criteria. So I am sure there may be something that can be done, it is just on what the big wigs want to do or not.

Makes ya wonder how many customers 'migrated' to Verizon or others over a lousy $18. Totally bad PR to have had it to begin with for the AT&T customers, even if it was the norm. The AT&T customers should have automatically had their fee waived, especially if Cingular wanted to keep these customers. Cingular could have been innovative here, especially in tough times like today where $18 will cause most folks to look elsewhere, on any purchase. Lots of lost 2-year contracts and phone sales due to someone's brilliant $18 idea.

Moving to another company isn't really the answer since you pay 36 usually for new activations....and the ETF if you're in contract. This new policy makes my job so much easier being the migrations dept. lol.

I dont know the whys and wherefores of this charge, and could care less. I'm just glad there's one less charge customers will be calling in to argue about.

Now if only we could get rid of the upgrade fee, and send out a nationwide letter explaining the purpose of taxes, and my job would be a lot easier.
