on the national GSM is there such a thing as geting charged for roaming? (or as long as my phone has service its free?)

I am a customer service for cingular wireless. On the GSM nation plan as long as you have a signal there are no romaing charges anywhere in the country. Even if your phone says cingular extend you still will not be charged.

Yes there is if you are on an old prefered nation plan. Or if you are on a home plan and outside of your home area.

With a GSM Nation plan, you will NOT be charged roaming in the US. Ever.
UNLESS -- your phone is using a tower in Canada or Mexico. Remember, the only way we know where you are is by what tower you use. (You are in upstate Vermont. Your phone gets a tower in Quebec. For billing purposes, you are in Quebec.) If you are spending time near the border, that might be something to worry about.
