What would happen if I put my AT&T SIM in an iPhone...?

Hey all,

A friend of mine just bought a jailbroken iPhone 3GS. He plans to unlock it so that he can use it on T-Mobile and on overseas networks. (Yes, he knows that he won't have 3G data service.)

I have an unlocked Nokia E71 that I've been using on AT&T for over a year and a half. I have the "dumbphone" unlimited data plan for $15 per month. Said friend wants to use my SIM card in his iPhone, just to see if/how it works.

I've never owned an iPhone, so I am wondering what would/might happen if my SIM is used in his iPhone, even temporarily. Would AT&T detect that my SIM is being used in an iPhone and therefore upgrade my data plan automatically? Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Yup, it'll happen... AT&T will remove that unlimited plan and place a $25 2GB cap plan instead, and, despite that data plan is changed, the iPhone will not connect to the internet until you change the IMEI

Interesting... what if I eventually buy and use a new/different unlocked Nokia phone in the future? Would I still be able to retain my current $15 unlimited data plan, or would I be automatically upgraded to the $25 2 GB data plan?

Thanks again.

As long as you don't get a smartphone, you will be OK with your current plan... Besides, if you get a non-ATT smartphone, they won't assure you the provision of data services (something about devices' software registration or some alike), so I'd advise you to get a non-smartphone, i.e. Nokia X6...

My Nokia E71 is a smartphone and I've been using it on AT&T for 1.5 years. However, it's not a model that AT&T carries (the E71x is a different model), so they don't recognize my E71 as a smartphone.

Here's hoping that I can do that again in the future, but I guess it's not a huge deal if I have no choice but to go with the $25 2 GB plan. I haven't come anywhere close to using 2 GB in a month thus far.

But isn't E71 an almost-smartphone and the E71x a smartphone? Wasn't it the difference between them? I mean, I'm not quite sure...

Actually the E71 is as much of a smartphone as the E71x, if not more so. The E71x is the AT&T branded version of the E71. It has a slightly newer/slicker GUI than the E71, but that's about it.

If you get an unlocked phone that isn't from AT&T and put it on AT&T service, it will register as a non-AT&T phone. So it will still be eligible for the unlimited data.
