IPHONE 4 and LIMITED data

I am 🤤 over the new Iphone. Currently have a non-smart phone (Samsung mythic) love it for the $15 unlimited data and full HTML web browsing....but really like the new Iphone...had the 2nd Iphone (first 3G version) and got rid of it b/c it had water damage...but guess what...I see no point going to this phone or any smart phone on at&t with the new data plans....THEY SUCK! If enough people protest this, perhaps it would make a point?

PS the new "smartphone" data plans would not cover my usage on the mythic let alone the feature crazy Iphone! SUCKS!!!!!!

AT&T is not going to budge on this one guy. Their goal is to educate on actual usage, lower plans for many to reduce churn (and gain customers while the others have higher plans) and recoup costs for higher usage users.

If enough people cancel over this, they will be forced to change. However, people will complain about it without cancelling, causing nothing to change, because ATT (like any company) is okay with any change that both makes them more money and doesn't cause mass churn.

The ones that are going over will cancel. AT&T would like nothing better. The ones that are staying under the new limits will be educated about the lower price and the ability to save money for their usage levels.

They will also gain subs and gain smartphone subs because of the lower cost of ownership.

Umm... they won't gain real smartphone subscribers. People who own smartphones actually like to *USE* them! So I think people who really *enjoy* their smartphones will *USE* them on another network.

Cause IT&T is too stingy to use spectrum that they have, and we all know they have spectrum that they don't use. They busted out a chunk of 30 extra mhz during the South by Southwest conference in Austin. No reason they can't use more spectrum nationally.

Real smartphone subscribers? Do you know how many business cusotmers use blackberry's for company purposes, and b/c of the way blackberry compresses data would be able to use the 200mb pacakge? I enjoy my iPhone constantly - i stream videos, ...

People like you are really clueless about the industry. You think because you are a big user EVERYONE must be a big user.

You are in the VERY SMALL minority. You are NOT the bread and butter for the industry. You fall into the same catagory as those who want unsubsidized phones to be the norm and call for government intervention on that issue.

Yes I stream video daily, listen to pandora daily, and surfthe net daily, and have never gone over 2 gigs. So you feel that the company should shape it's policy around your usage habits? How about the person who hardly ever uses data - why should they pay more for less usage? 98% of ATTs customers use less than 2 gigs a month - so this change is positive for 98% of ATT users. Youre never going to make everyone happy, and I'm sorry you are in the vast minority that don't like this move, but the point is, most consumers do like it. I like the tiered system, while I may disagree with ATT on the tier points, I feel it is more than fair to charge people more who more, and charge those who use less less.

Other than the iPhone AT&T does not subsidize smartphones at the same level as Verizon. The average subsidy is just over $100.

A lot of people complain about things but don't act on how they feel. I acted on how I feel about the deformed/retard Backflip, and got a real Android smartphone, the Moto Droid.

I acted upon my complaint. And I know I'm not the only one who left IT&T over lack of Android. (June 10, still deformed Backflip is the only -supposed- Android thing on IT&T)

you do know that at&t did an audit and found that 98% of all smartphone users do not use more than 2gb of data.

the mythic is not a smartphone, there is not way in hell that you can use more than 2gb of data.

would you rather pay $25 for 2gb of data and use wi-fi to free up some of that space, or pay $30 for an unlimited amount when you're only using between 200mb and 2gb?

I'd go with saving money rather than paying for something that i'm not going to use to it's full potential

Saying that just because a device isn't a "smartphone" it can't use a lot of data is a really, really stupid thing to say. It all depends of a persons *usage*, not the device. Maybe an individual browses the web a lot on their regular cell phone. . it all depends of an individual users habits, not the device.

Believe it or not, that is what the CS reps will tell you... that a smartphone uses more data.. 😕

And I agree with you... it depends on how the person uses the phone.

Yep, and reps will also tell you to drain your battery completly before charging, uh no!!!!! Screw that. I plug my Droid in at night when I'm sleeping, and I don't unplug it til I'm ready to walk out the door. I like to have a fully charged device. Not wait for it to complety discharge.

All reps are capable of doing is trying to upsell features.

I do the same thing. I think what they are trying to say is that the lithium battery can only be recharged a finite number of times. There really IS a limit! Most manufacturers specs say 500-1000 times or so. If you care about your battery and you re-charge it every day....you will have to replace the battery sooner than you would if you use it all up and get 6-12 more hours down the road in life before re-charging again. you know?

Part of what the new pricing does is drive unprofitable (unreasonably heavy) users away from AT&T into the loving arms of their competitors, thus making their COMPETITORS less cost effective. It's brilliant.

A great myth perpetuated in the cellular community is that ALL customers are "good" customers. Far from it. If you're an iPhone diehard using 8 gigs a month on $29.99 3G plan because you're too lazy to switch back and forth with WiFi when it's available AND you have the gall to drive up their operating costs by calling in twice a month during your spare time to b*tch about the crappy coverage, they don't want you.

They don't care if you're paying $100/month for your one line of service. They would rather have one custo...

What I think the right thing to do when a market reaches saturation, is deploy more spectrum, duh!!!!!!

The person who invented the cellphone, Martin Cooper, who is smarter than you btw, said the wireless carriers have plenty of spectrum, they just don't use it efficiently.

And btw, I heard the Wimax network in Philly has reached saturation, with Clear, Sprint, and one of the local cable companes all having customers on the same Wimax network.

We're talking about trying to use less data on the wireless data networks. Well if the wireless companies would use more spectrum, which ATT has, data usage would be less of an issue. It's the wireless companies that are inefficient not the users.

Maybe they should actually *try* meating deman. That is what a bussiness is suppose to do right? Meet demand? Well...customers demand more, not less data capabiliies. ATT isn't delivering on the customers demand.

There are two items at play here, economics and technology.

Economic response: There is no way to find out what the actual market value of one GB of data is if you are selling unlimited packages. You cannot perform arithmetic when one of the values is infinity. Changing to a tiered pricing is the only way for the marketing gurus to determine what the "fair market" price of data service is, and even that only works if competitors follow suit, which they will eventually.

What I think the right thing to do when a market reaches saturation, is deploy more spectrum, duh!!!!!!

This is both the correct long-term solution and a technological impossibility (right now). AT&T owns TONS of AWS spectrum and it would ...

Very interesting read,...very well written. Perhaps you should be a writer for Wired magazine.

IMO trying to get people to use wifi more often, @ Starbucks, Mcdonalds, Barnes & Noble, and airports, works if you happen to be there. I prefer mobility. Not being stuck in one of those above stated places.

The basic idea is that WiFi needs to be used EVERY time it is feasible. It's not always feasible. If you're in the back of a taxi or running Google Navigation, WiFi is insufficient. The problem is the huge volume of "suits" carrying around iPhones inside their office buildings all day long running them off the 3...

I see very little to disagree with in this article.

I have a good friend who is a semi-professional photographer. He's also kinda nerdy like me so he sports a Droid Incredible with the 8MP shooter on it.

Guess what? Every time he wants to go out to a function or event he might want to remember for a while, he brings along his SLR! For the casual snap-shotter like me, there's no difference between 8 MP and 800 MP- it's just a decent picture either way. For the trained eye, no "multi" device will ever be good enough and they will always carry around a dedicated device to get the job done.

It's the same with processing power on smartphones. 1GHz is plenty. In fact it's too much if you asked me, but I'm a big fan of battery powe...

I feel that ATT has done its research on this. Back in the dark ages, when Southwesten Bell Mobile Systems merged with Bell South to create Cingular (I told you this was ancient history) all of the plans changed from having unlimited nights and weekend minutes to 5000. Such an uproar you wouldn't believe. However, when you would look at one of their bills, they might be using 500 N&W minutes per month. The word "Unlimited" just made them feel safe. The same applies here. Most people use way less than 2 gig and will have no trouble staying under that limit. Besides, wifi is available in bunches of places now, and that does not go against your limit. Besides, if you do go over, you get another 2gig for just $25 more. Yes, you may be the except...

actually if you have data pro and go over your alotted 2Gb, you are provided another 1Gb for $10.

the 200Mb for $15 plan will give you another 200Mb for the same $15.

and on the subject of data usage, i work for the company and switch my SIM card between my bold and my backflip to demo for customers so i am using the data services constantly and have only used 1.2GB at my peak usage. the only people that have to worry about the limit are the ones that tether/stream/download CONSTANTLY. which, as was previosly stated, represents a significant strain on the data network. so the limit is in fact to reward and encour
