? about last bill when closing out service

Jayshmay

Mar 26, 2010, 7:23 PM
I just spoke with ATT customer service, and was told that I will be charged the ENTIRE month of my last billing cycle even though I canceled service 2 days into my current billing cycle.

?SHOULDN'T? I only be billed for 2 days of service up til when I canceled?

I'm not rich!!! I shouldn't have to pay for service that isn't even currently turned on!

Please help.

AFAIK, the last bill shouldn't be a full bill.

Call back and try to get someone who isn't retarded, or correct me if I'm wrong.

I can assure you the final bill is not prorated if you were billed in advance. If you want to be credited back, wait until you get the final bill and call at that time. We don't adjust unbilled charges. Technically you have been charged, but it is easier to wait until you get the bill after cancellation.

Btw, I didn't exactly formally cancel. I ported 2 #'s by calling Vzn. So doing a successful port cancels an acct automatically, right?

ATT customer service told me I cancelled on the 19th, which was 2 days into my billing cycle.

Yes, when you port out, it cancels the lines right away. What I would do is call in when you get the last bill and ask to be credited back. Most reps would credit because AT&T is big on customer service and satisfaction right now. Plus they like people to leave with a good taste in their mouth for when things go south with your current provide, you may consider coming back.

He does make a real good point:

"Post paid" or monthly bills are actually paid in advance. It's why most times when you first sign up, your first bill is larger than normal (part of first month, all of second month, new-line-activation fees).

So if you paid your bill for the end of March and your now 2 days into that "bill" you have actually paid for April and service you are not using. Assuming you have no ETF, you should actually get money back.

My Company sells Verizon, Sprint, AT&T and a wide variety of prepaid phones.

I sell and use AT&T, but I don't work for AT&T.

The reason I use AT&T is that's what my GF and her family has. I pay $10 a month + data for my phone. Previously I had Sprint and was fairly happy with them.

I don't mean come across as mean but, Werner you are wrong. When you are billed in advanced, you are not credited back when you cancel in the middle of the billing cycle. The terms and conditions actually state this. The final bill is not prorated for advanced billing. We advise people cancel on the last day of the billing cycle. I know it isn't fair but I deal with escalations like this everyday.

I don't like what ATT is doing with Android. I found a deal for the Motorola Droid for only $20 on the letstalk website, way, way too good of a deal to pass up. I've been using the Droid on Vzn for 4 days now, and I like it a lot. I ported over both mine, and my mothers #'s over.

I cancelled service only 2 days into my billing cycle, and I'm afraid I'm going to get charged for a full month, frinkin nerve wracking, I 'm not rich and I shouldn't have to pay for service for a full month on an acct that has been canceled.

I remember reading you was from Vegas. Didn't know if it was a coverage thing. I once had to n95 as well. Loved that phone have the iphone now. Thinking of switching to the nexus one. Not sure if I want to hold out for the desire. Been with at&t/cingular for over 10 years had good service not look to switch anytime soon.

Yeah, I was with Cingular/ATT for just over 8yrs myself. Not just wireless, but everything, pretty much my whole life is about change right now, pre/2010-post/2010, I just want *everything* in my life to be different than before 2010, so I'm all about new & fresh things right now in my life.

If you do get an Android phone just make sure it says "With Google" much better that way, no bloatware.

Sometimes change is good. If I could walk into a store and buy the nexus one I would. I dont like to buy things offline. Want to see it hold it first.

leaves a *LOT* to be desired. I won't buy a Yahoo Android. Thought just makes me feel dirty inside :/

I'm holding my vote until I'm due for an upgrade, which should be sometime this fall. At that point more AT&T Android phones should be out.

Hopefully AT&T will also have 7 and Palm by that time as well so I'll have more of a choice. I have a Droid at work and it's a solid phone. Thankfully there's a lot more competition out than when I got my iPhone, as I very much dislike Apple.

iPhone, Blackberry, Droid, 7, palm... so many choices looming.

Yep, the. Droid is definetly solid and very, very well built. I even watched a YouTube video of someone trying to scratch the screen and it wouldn't scratch, its made of gorrilla glass, which is scratch proof. I have a nice blue case coming that I got on eBay for only $8, damn good deal, and its coming from California so it shouldn't take too long to get here.

If you have any questions about Android, I'm more than willing to help you out with them. I haven't handled an N1 directly, but I am running 2.1 on my (rooted) droid, so I'm familiar with the OS.

I'm with Jay on this one though.. If you are staying with ATT, your best bet for android is unlocked.

I can tell you that one of the coolest features of android atm is the voice search (I use it all the time) and voice to text. Without the Google search widget, it doesn't work and ATT's move to yahoo removes that widget.

I hope they at least let the Desire through unscathed.

Thanks Menno. And I love that you did not go into the speach about how I need to switch to verizon. I have the iphone (3Gs) now, nothing wrong with it just ready for a change. Its just getting old. I have unlocked phones before. (N95 and N97) N95 was great n97 not so much. Out of the OS what one do you like the most, and why. I stuck between ordering the N1 and waiting on the desire.

I won't tell someone to switch from a carrier they're happy with.

Out of the SenseUI and Stock OS you mean?

It's a hard question. I never really messed with the Sense one for more than a couple of minutes here and there. I love the feel of it though. It does feel more cohesive than the stock OS, and it ads some new features (Scenes.. which allows you to totally change the look of your phone depending on what you are doing).

On the other hand, I can't really complain that much about the Stock OS. It works very well, it just takes a bit longer to learn, and it's more customizable than Sense after you do so.

So I guess if you're the type of person who wants a seamless experience out of the box, and you're patient enough to wait ...

2.1 brings native syncing with Yahoo (yahoo blocked it initially). You can continue using yahoo if you wish, but I think you might be pleasantly surprised by gmail if you've never used it before.

For outlook contacts, there is not "plug in and sync" option for getting your contacts over. The easiest way to do this is to export them from outlook as a .csv file and then import them into gmail once you get it set up (you can look how to do this by logging into gmail from your computer).

Your contacts will then sync to your phone (you can set the phone only to show contacts with phone numbers in the contact list to prevent confusion) and then when you go into the mail app (yahoo) and start typing someone's name it will auto complete fo...

It sounds like its just an extra step to get my contact sync'd.

I dont have a love for yahoo or anything just is what the wife and I have used sence college. Everyone I know emails to my yahoo account. Dont want to have to contact everyone to tell them I switched email addresses. Would be the same way if you had to let everyone know you have a new phone number after 15years.

It is an extra step, but once you set up outlook to sync with Gmail, all your contacts will be updated wirelessly so it's a "set it and forget it" kind of thing.

you can set your gmail to forward your yahoo email to your gmail account. and then put in your sig "this is my new email address" that way you don't miss anything your friends send you, but you can reply with your new account.

I know, switching emails sucks though... I kinda had to cause I made my first email when I was 13 or so so it was something I deff don't want submitting with my resume's.

As for the phone number issue.. Google's trying to do away with that using "Google Voice." that way it doesn't matter what phone you're on, people can always call your number to...

If you are billed in Arears you will get one last prorated bill for the couple days of service. If you are billed in advance and your account is left with a credit, at&t will cut you a check.

This rep/ I spoke with gave the impressiom that even though I canceled Service on the 2nd day of my cycle that I will get billed til the end of my billing cycle, which I believe. Is April 17, I literally felt like I was getting robbed, being charged for Service that I'm not getting cause I'm not with ATT anymore. But you guys have put me @ ease some.

The correct answer to this question would all have to do with whether you're billed in advance or arrears.

If your billed in advance, you're paying for service a month in advance. If you ported out 2 days after your bill cycle closed, AT&T would have been creating a new bill for you for service a month in advance, and you WOULD be responsible for the charges through the end of your bill cycle. Read your contract! I'm sorry your not "rich", but I don't think that excuse relieves you from your contractual obligation.

If you've been with AT&T for awhile or started in service in certain markets, there is a possibility that you're billed in arrears. If thats the case and you're billed for service after you use it, then the agent you...

According to your contract and AT&T policy, you can cancel service whenever you like. If you call in to cancel your service at the end of your contract of course you would not have an Early Termination Fee. If you call to cancel service at the end of your contract and it is not the end of your billing cycle, AT&T will Automatically cancel your service for the end of the bill cycle. If you call and say you want to cancel your service immediatly AT&T will do that but you are not prorated for the rest of the Bill cycle. That's just the way it is. That's AT&T Policy (THE LAW! 🙂 ) So its best to cancel at the end of your bill cycle. I'm sorry.

According to the AT&T Service agreement under the bills and payments section: "monthly service and certain other charges are billed one month in advance, and there is no proration of such charges if service is terminated on other than the last day of your billing cycle."

Sorry but its in the agreement you recieved when you set up service and agreed to when you accepted the Terms and Conditions (T&C)
