GAIT

Hey guys, can anyone fill me in on something? My mom is a current cingular customer using a Nokia 6340i GAIT phone. She has been holding on to it and her plan for as long as she can for the multi-network coverage, but just got a letter the today and wants my help because I'm in the biz. She didn't have the letter with her when she called me, but it said you guys were upgrading your systems and was offering her one of two free phones. One camera phone, and one that didn't have a camera, but was comparible in features. Is this the "get your butt into a GSM phone and plan finally" letter? Which phones are being offered?

I got that letter too about a month or two ago. They offered me a LG or I believe a Samsung, they are almost free or free anyway. I still have my GAIT phone and will probably hold out until it dies, (I've had it about three years now) Cingular's GSM coverage is pretty good now but if she is in really rural places hold on to it because IT WORKS!!

the letter is probobly offering the Mot v220 or the Nokia 3120. i saw one yesterday. it has to be done through the number on the mailer, not in store.

all the new plans also can be used with the GAIT phones, so if the current plans are better she can switch and still use the same phone.

i would probobly reccomend upgrading anyhow. reception should be the same in most areas.

While it is true that you can use your GAIT phone on a GSM plan, putting it on that plan will disable the TDMA access, making it like another GSM phone. If you want to keep full functionality of the GAIT device, I would suggest you stay right where you are.

no no no, picking up TDMA is a function of the phone, not the plan. the plan just keeps the calls from getting rated as roaming calls.

all plans post nov. 15th have the GAIT codes built in, and when a GAIT phone is activated on one, there is one more code we add, and we register the ESN of the phone, so the the TDMA calls get rated properly.

this discussion has been had multiple times before.

Oh, ok. I'm a blue rep, didn't realize that orange made it able to do that, thanks for clearing it up for me.

Well she does live out in the sticks, but her husband has a gsm phone with cingular, too and they both get excellent service at their house...but they do travel a lot and she still gets service in a few places that he doesnt. So, I guess the appropriate question is when are they shuttin' down tdma and amps? This is just a letter encouraging her to switch over to gsm?

AMPS will be dead soon, TDMA not for at least a few years. the got to get just about everybody on GSM before they decide to kill TDMA

Between now and the time TDMA is killed, will they decrease the footprint of TDMA? My mom has a really old plan that gave her (I guess) GAIT-like coverage with no roaming. She's had it maybe 4 years.

I just wondered if they'll start cutting tdma coverage in some areas or if instead they'll just squeeze the remaining customers into less and less bandwidth.
