I had no idea that ATT is so innovative of a company, no idea at all. Theres some neat stuff in this article.

Actually - AT&T/Bell labs was established in 1925 and can be credited for tons of advancements in technology:

1947 invents the transistor and wins Nobel Prize
1958 introduces first commercial modem
1962 launches first communications satellite
1971 creates UNIX OS

"1958 first commercial modem"? I can only guess it was for fax machines, because the internet didn't yet exist at that point, right?

I kinda thought transistors were in radios long before 1947?

You are correct, the first internet connection was made in 1969. And the public couldn't connected to it until it was opened to ISPs in 1989. Fax machines weren't invented yet, either. I don't think the Bell Labs researchers had any specific use in mind when they invented it, other than getting people to use more phone lines for something.
