Depends on who buys a new smartphone after the 6th.

I won't be affected because I already have the 30$ data plan. 🙂

No more chargebacks on Smartphone plans becuase the customer cancelled the plan once they got their mail in rebates.

I can understand why AT&T is doing it though. With as many calls as I get every day over data charges, people should be required to have the data plan. Plus AT&T is trying to roll out visual voice mail for all pda phones and they will be required to have an unlimited data plan to get the info anyways.

As mad as people may be over this, it will cause a lot less headaches in the future.

I'm pro choice. I mean, I do think it's dumb for somebody to by a smart phone, which is made to run on the internet, and not have an unlimited data plan on it. However, I also think that it should be the customers choice as to whether they want to just use a smart phone for it's cool features.

"Effective September 6, 2009, an appropriate data plan is required to activate or upgrade to a Smartphone." --at&t news release

When I read this I get the impression data plans are only on subsidized agreements, retail or outright pricing will still be available without the plan.

Anyone else know differently?

I would say only on subsidized purchases.

Because if you do not want the data package, I am only going to sell the phone to you at retail and you won't qualify for the rebate which means I wouldn't bother putting the IMEI on your account. 🙂

Verde321 I've had good luck giving rebates with retail purchase too. Can't recall any declines with that IMEI on it. Helps me keep customers from going to walmart (across the street) because besides knowing what I'm doing, I can compete on price.

Have you not gotten the same results or know something I don't?

I'm just saying...if a customer doesn't want the data package...they do not qualify for the rebate.

Therefore they can buy the pda retail and not be subject to being REQUIRED to have the data package because I did not put the pda imei on their account.

That is what I was trying to say. ^_^ 🙂

I just got my rebate back on my bb 8900 and I purchased it outright without a data plan. Their rebate "policies" don't hold much ground in real life.

Yeah, I have seen people get rebates for things they canceled before their 30 days were up.

But with my company, we are required to fill the rebate out for the customer. So if they "don't qualify" I will not hand them a rebate. /shrug

My only hope is that with a larger take rate on data plans for PDA devices they would lower the rate. $30 is a little high especially when the line between a PDA phone and a non PDA phone is getting fairly thin.

I think your right. They do stuff like make something mandatory wait a month or two then change it. Remember the 1000 txt then 1500 txt then family msg. It sucks cuz the better plans charge us back when what we did gets cancelled. I'm betting money they do something like a family data or pda $25/20, thats been the track record for the past 2 years. Its been moving pretty quickly in the wireless industry with changes lately.

but they are using it for its full capabilities, just minus the data plan that they should have gotten so they are now paying for the overages. 🤣
