Hey everyone, me, my brother and sister have moved here to dallas, from ontario, canada. We are currently using Rogers for our service, ofcoarse we are roaming. Rogers is GSM, so we would prefer to use GSM. I have phones that i brought over from canada, we have the blackberry bold, and curve, we will get a third phone from the carrier. I heard a lot of good stuff about at&t good and bad. and we heard stuff about t-mobile also. since they are the only GSM carriers here in the US. What do you guys think? Please don't be biased and be honest. We need help and your opinions.

I wont be traveling much, since im here i would like to go to different cities like las vegas and new york etc.. i mainly text, i barely talk at all. I used about 150 min a month. i do a lot of texting and internet. its the main thing, when i am here, i will be going to school and working for farmers insurance. I have a bold and my curve, so i wont have to sign a contract since i already have a nice phone. but who knows.. anything will help.

Go with T-Mobile then. You can sign up for a flexpay plan of 30 a month which gives you 300 minutes and unlimited weekends. It's a great deal, I had that plan when I was on T-Mobile.

What about AT&T? They seem to have very good coverage and there data is 3G. I had 3G in Canada so I would like something fast. Do you have a AT&T?

I have AT&T, but I am not thrilled with them at the moment. In Dallas you should not have any issues with them and yes, they have 3G. T-Mobile has it too, but it is not as big at AT&T's.

There are very, very few on Phone Scoop who aren't biased. Phone Scoop is full of biased fanboys of each carrier.
It's as if some of these people are the CEO's grandsons!

Anyway, try to get feedback from somebody who actually lives in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.

Is there any where I can go to not get biased or fanboy info?? People tell me t-mobile is really good, but not for travel. And the only GSM carrier here AT&T which I hear is the strongest of GSM.

Every network is good in certain areas more so than another network. Some places Tmo might be better, and in other places ATT might be better. You said you want 2 things, to be able to travel, and fast 3G, so sounds like you should go with ATT, they're currently in the process of moving 3G to 850mhz band, good for better bldg penetration and faster data speeds. You can also go to each carriers website and check coverage maps.
Keep in mind moving 3G to the 850mhz band is a timely process that will take a while, so who knows when places like Dallas or Las Vegas will get upgraded. It could be a couple months or 14-16 months, who knows.

I noticed that at&t has a lot of phones that rogers has, like the iphone, bold, there blackberries, and all. I definitly need data and voice at the same time, i need to check my email while on the phone. can the GSM here do that?? in canada we have that for rogers, data and voice. What about the CDMA here? CDMA in canada cannot do that, i dont know if you can do it here? I heard verizon is very good here, but i can't do CDMA because i like the freedom of switching phones and international roam. I will be going back to canada every month along with my family. sorry about all the questions.

Yeah, you can do voice & data simultaneously on ATT. Like be on a phone call and be using Google Maps at the same time. I love it.

Questions are perfectly fine.

I've been with Cingular/ATT for 7.5yrs, only wireless carrier I've ever been with. I believe where Tmo has 3G they can do voice & data simultaneously, but they use 1700mhz for 3G where as ATT uses 850/1900mhz for 3G.

Yeah, I'm kinda happy with ATT. Longest relationship I've ever had with a business.

thats good, would you switch? or are you going to stay with them for awhile, hows there coverage and where are you at? I read these forums and its either about.. att or verizon, everyone claims verizon is better, etc.. i know verizon is CDMA, which is ok.. but i believe GSM is better. In canada, Rogers and fido are our GSM providers, Bell and Telus are CDMA, but Telus is going to migrate all to GSM so really... there will only be 1 CDMA carrier in canada. I have been with rogers canada for 4 years now, canada carriers are really expensive and looking at plans here is amazing!

I haven't really considered switching. I live in Las Vegas right now, service is fine here whether it's the far south, far north or far west parts of Las Vegas or the strip is fine. Earlier tonight I heard someone say service at the airport is bad. But I have no complaints.

My opinion of Verizon is that they're ****ey, and those "network" advertisments brainwash people. Especially Verizon fanboys on Phone Scoop, oh boy they're like Verizon zombies! If every other network doesn't match up to Verizon then why does Tmo have 40+ million customers, Sprint 48m, and AT&T 87m customers. Those networks are good enough for all those people.

I just feel Verizon's ****iness is a huge turn off. It all boils down to WHERE you live and who is best in your area. For GSM AT&T has more national coverage than Tmo, and for CDMA Verizon has more national coverage than Sprint.

I'm not biased because I'm a consumer and not an employee who is a fanboy just because of a paycheck from a perticular carrier.

you actually got a really good point, when i first moved here. 80% of carrier advertisment were from verizon. i saw a lot of commercials and they claim to have the largest network in america. the only thing is, i dont see a lot of good phone features. the only good phone i probably only like is the storm, but rogers has the storm GSM too. so yeah. i like having good opinions. I'm more for GSM than anything. so i would probably have to try AT&T

That's cool, you could unlock a BB Storm from Rogers and use it on ATT. Keep in mind though, only 3G phones do voice and data simultaneously. I have unlimited txt & picture msg'g on my acct for 3 lines up to 5 lines for $30/mo, internet on 2 lines at $10 each, and 1400 minutes + 7pm night minutes, totaling about $160/mo. Quite a bit.

thats all your paying? wow thats pretty cheap. you pay a lot in canada, with that price, it comes up to 1 phone with everything. i would have to go check that out. So are you a GSM person also? or it doesnt matter to you? So how come i read on these forums and all these people say att sucks, drop calls, no signal, etc..

Cause they're fanboys who work for these companies. Personally just because I get a paycheck from a perticular company doesn't make me a frinkin walking advertisement for that company.

Yeah, I most definetly prefer GSM, cause I use an unlocked phone, I like the Nokia N95 a lot and ATT doesn't have high enough standards to carry the Nokia N95, so I buy my phones either on ebay or amazon.

If you can find someone who has ATT and lives in Dallas that can give you an opinion that would be good, it's good to get an opinion from someone local.

If you have a Bold and want 3G, you're only choice is AT&T. Due to our crowded airwaves, T-Mobile got stuck with 1700MHz for 3G. Your phone will do 850/1900/2100.

I live just north of dallas and I have been an Att customer for 6ish years. I started working for Att about a year ago too.

In the more rural areas around Dallas...Its Att or you don't get reception. Other providers work in certain spots, but att has the most coverage once you get out of the city.

If you are staying in the city of Dallas/Ft Worth or at least in the metroplex...you should be fine with either Tmobile or dallas. Pretty much the entire metroplex has 3G with att and I would assume that Tmobile's 3g is about the same coverage wise.

The att 3g should be faster than tmobiles. As far as 2g goes, Att's is still decent just dont expect to do amazingly awesome things on the internet with the edge network. ^_^

Up here where I...

thanks a bunch verde, that is some really good info that i need. hows your service with at&t are you happy? satisfied? and problems? i will live in the dallas city/metro area. i talked to some of my co-workers and they really like att. i work with 6 workers and 2 of them have different service, one has t-mobile, they say they like it, customer service is great, but when walking into bigger buildings have barely service. the other one amy, she has verizon. she said verizon has good coverage, but doesnt have any good selection of phones, customer service she said she hates, and she says even though she'll have coverage, the data will drop to the low tier and it gets static when its only 1 or 2 bars. she says she will go to att after her contra...

I live about an hour north of you then. Up here, its att or bust. I would say 90%+ of the people in my town have att and most of them are satisfied with att.

Personally, I have never had any problems with the customer service like so many people claim to have had.

Great choice. I'm local to N. Texas also southwest of the metroplex.

To browse the web and talk you need to be on 3G network (thats your internet speed) not edge or GPRS. While on a call hit the return arrow and it will ask you to go to the home screen, then access whatever you need.

Check out phonescoop if you ever need anything else.
