Hi I had a question. I am on a family talk plan right now under my dads account. because i am not elegible for an upgrade right now, i wanted to open a new line of service with att, and get the phone i want. my question is, once i do all that, is there a way i can swap my new phone number they would give me, for my old on on the family talk account?

You have a couple of options. If there is another line that is eligible for upgrade on the account, you could (with dad's permission) use that line to get the discount, and then do a transfer of service to start your own account.

That's the most practical way

There isn't a way to just start up a new phone number and then regenerate your line after it is canceled. If a new number is generated, it becomes yours for 24 months.

If no lines are eligible, you could add a line to the family talk plan, get the discount, and then transfer your existing number onto your own account, and just place your sim card into the new phone.

I would think if you ported the number out of the family talk account in the middle of your contract you will be charged an ETF for breaching your contract. They may also require a deposit from you to open up a line in your name with your own credit. Depending on the phone you want it may be cheaper to shop around and buy the phone outright and slip your sim card into it and stay on the family plan until your contract term is up.

If so, you can "borrow" that upgrade and switch out your SIM cards. This will work on any phone except for the Iphone (I think I am right about the Iphone having a SIM number assigned to it). The person whose upgrade you borrowed can use yours when you are eligible.

The second choice is to do an Exception (early) Upgrade. Most stores do these. You still sign a 2-yr contract and there is an $18 upgrade fee as normal, but the equipment is more expensive by $50-$75. You can do this if you have ...

thanks for all the info. after all those calculations, it probably is just cheaper in the long run to buy the phone i want out front retail, or an early upgrade option. thanks!
