Working for stale penuts

HelloEveryone

Mar 3, 2005, 2:37 PM
Authorized dealer reps:
Does anyone else work 9 or 11 hours shifts without breaks or 40+ hours with no overtime pay, or how about personal commission quotas that are higher than what the whole store sells?

(just wondering if I am alone in this biz)

p.s. or how about selling returned phones to customers as if they are brand new?

I heard about the selling of used phones as brand new. A while back i bought a nokia 3100 and returned it 2 days later cuz i didnt like it. a week or so later, we get a call from some random lady saying that this number was in her phone. We came to the conclusion that someone sold my used phone as someone elses new phone, thought that was totally screwed up.

Umm... dude. I don't know who you work for but, uh, that kind of work is illegal. According to OSHA, any shift of 8+ hours is mandated to have two 15 min breaks and an hour lunh in the middle of the shift. And any work week with 40+ hours or a two week pay period of 80+ hours is entitled to overtime... unless you earn commission. You're being worked like a slave in a sweatshop 😳

I (and I assume "HelloEveryone" as well) am salried. This is how companies get around the aforementioned laws. I only get breaks of 15 mins or more on days that I have others scheduled with me. Today, I'm working alone & don't get that. Even with a co-worker, I can count on one hand the number of times I've ever taken an hour. Plus - taking breaks results in being viewed as having no motivation to sell / poor work ethic.

Well, it does suck for exempt (salaried) workers... You can work 60 hrs/week and still get no OT. You may get better bonuses than the hourly worker, but thats based on the company.

Stop bitching about your job here. If you are not happy doing what you're doing I feel sorry for all of you, but let's not turn the Cingular forum into a bitter site of traumatic job experiences.

You do know that there is a federal law (United States) mandating overtime pay for those who make an X amount or less. Not sure where that line is drawn though. The legislation is currently working on raising the level of pay per hour in which it's mandated that one gets paid OT. Check into it and fight for your rights.

This law is only for hourly paid workers. Salary workers, beware and make sure you read fine print of your contract.
