Im so disturbed at this comment....
I just cant believe someone in the wireless industry would make a comment like that. Was that a joke?
I previously just read this forum, but that was the most moronic thing I have ever read, it made me start an account.
WOW.
Now, GSM believe it or not is rather old, the development of the global system for mobile communications started from 1980-1982. The idea was origionally brought up because with the way old cellular systems used to operate, there was no such thing as roaming (from carrier to carrier). In europe, much more so than here it was important for people driving on lets say the autobahn to cross over into france from germany and not have their phone go dead. Yes, cell phones were also more readily available in Europe before they were here too. Now, the concept of GSM allowed for seamless roaming betwe...

Well, um honestly who ever said that had a point. Now, before I say this I work for T-Mobile, previously worked for cingular...I'm in the GSM biz...

And No, Europe didn't get it becuase they had GSM first and they were mandated to use only gsm..that was before CDMA came out. 🙄

Exactly before CDMA came out otherwise Europe would be using CDMA if it was out at same time with GSM you just answered your own question!!!
The fact is, there was no CDMA, you're right. However, they had to use something. In the time since the GSM network was origionally established, look at where it is now? The advancements are amazing. To say Europe would die for a CDMA network, and would have gone with CDMA had it been a choice at that time is far from a relevant response or conculsion. You can't use hypothetical theories to...

jessi, don't get sucked into this, you can't win, any positives with gsm will get shot down by this person.I would just let this thread die!!!
JessiCSR said:Didn't Europe as a whole decide that GSM was the best way to go? CDMA was pushed during this time frame as well.

JessiCSR said:True...by a slight margin. And when Qualcomm pitched CDMA (around the same time GSM's future was still up in the air), Europe told them to stick it.
yeah. Yes GSM and CDMA came out close to each other...but GSM was first.

Don't know why you guys bother this clown posted the same thing in another forum exactly, he or she knows CDMA is the fastest growing and Europe would die for CDMA, reasons for this are its cheaper to build holds more calls per tower and you don't need as many towers as with GSM.Not to mention data rates are 3 times faster on cdma, Europe didn't initially get it because our government here started it and oops they actually did something right who knew. CDMA is a much better technology but it wasn't around when Europe initially invested billions of dollars into the cell industry now they are kicking themselves in the a@@ believe me.

In terms of growth percentage, yes (approx 29% vs approx 23%). In terms of raw numbers, hardly. In just over one year (since GSM passed the one billion subscriber mark in Jan 04) GSM has added more than 282 million subscribers, which is more than the total number of subscribers in the world after ten years of operation (1995-2004) for CDMA (approx 240 million at the end of Dec 04).
Europe would die for CDMA
Qualcomm did try to pitch it to the GSM/ETSI but it was late in the development stage for the GSM spec and the Europeans didn't like the fact that Qualcomm held all of the juicy patents on the technology so the...
