Activate 2G iPhone without extending contract?

I currently have a 2G iPhone that i am using as an iPod and don't have a sim in it at all, but eventually I want to start using it as a phone. I have an AT&T line already, but i really don't want to extend my contract for a used iPhone. If I attach the IMEI and put the right data package on it will it still extend my contract when being synced to iTunes? If so is there a way around it without unlocking it?

yes, you would have to start a new contract. the only way to activate the iphone 2g is via iTunes and it MAKES you sign a two year contract.

Well you could jailbreak the phone and not have to go to itunes to activate it. All you would have to do is put an active simcard in the phone and it will be up and running. The jailbreak process is very ocmplex so I would look into before you do it.
