how does it work? what part of data does it go through voice or data?

It goes through voice, but the status updates on the buddy list are updated by SMS. There is no data involved with PTT at all. So you need voice/sms in order for PTT to function. But you will not be billed SMS charges for the updates, the system knows.

ok here is another question, if the ptt works via voice can i take for ex curve to Mexico and use the ptt unl with the unl ptt service? 🤨

PTT does not work off the AT&T network, especially internationally. So if you are in an off-network area domestically, it will not work.
You can receive but cannot initiate, in which case if you were in mexico it would charge you roaming voice minutes.

ok then. i have nextel right now but where im about to go there is no nextel (for now) and i was tring to find out way to lower international costs

I dont think thats correct. Ive been in off-network areas with PTT and it was working perfectly fine for me, as long as im not in another country ofcourse. Someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong...no hard feelings

Yes all of North America uses the 850/1900 MHz spectrum, and most of South America uses it as well.
South America is not as regulated with the frequencies so you will encounter some carriers using 900/1800
...
