Help with picking a PDA

The dealer I work for is requiring us to get pda's, which is fine for me because I was already looking at getting one. I live in a rural area that has coverage issues so I need one that will pick up good. Other than that I am open. Any suggestions and why would be a huge help. I know the specs and have done a comparison but actual owner experience would be a big help.

My suggestion would be either the Blackberry Curve or Pearl. (I prefer the full keyboard on the Curve). First of all, these phones are Edge, so you should not have any reception problems with the. Secondly, they are very easy to set up and use. If you do not live in a 3G area, the difference in speed would not be seen. My wife uses a Pearl and loves it. It gets very good reception.

I would say definitely a Blackberry or iPhone. The blackberry and iPhone are both easy to setup, learn, and use. The iPhone would be good if you want something fun. Before anyone comments about the lack of push mail on the iPhone, it will be here next month. Along with a good deal of 3rd party apps.

Stay away from Windows Mobile though.

Windows Mobile is a great interface. It has unparalleled support out there for it. Every program you would ever want will work on WinMo.

It has some problems like lagging/freezing when compared to BlackBerry OS or OS X. But for something that is so open to 3rd party applications and software development it is to be expected.

WinMo 6.1 should be out soon and that is going to offer a lot of stuff that has been long overdue, mainly threaded text messaging.

I would suggest a Blackberry for the reception. An iPhone would be great for net browsing (the only thing that beats safari is Opera Mini) but the reception lacks behind the Blackberry. Oh yeah, the GPS is MUCH better compared to Google Maps 😎

I was pointing you away from Window's Mobile simply because you stated that you were new to PDA/Smartphones. I would agree that WM has some merit, but often takes a lot of advanced tweaking to get it running properly. Also, much of the 3rd party apps that are boasted about are the CAUSE of the instability. If you want to tackle the WM world, I would suggest that you at least start with the non-touch version Smartphone. The best of those is the Moto Q9h.

I've never had problems with loading 3rd party software on a blackberry, and with the iPhone's certification process for 3rd party apps, I doubt you'll see any problems there. But with WM, I've literally had to uninstall most of my apps one at a time to find out what was causing issues. M...

You need to make sure and read the original post. He said he is a dealer, and as such his store cannot even sell the iPhone.

I personally don't think it is a great idea to carry a phone you cannot sell.

Mr. Customer - What kind of truck do you drive?

Mr. Ford Sales Guy - A Chevy

Doesn't work very well.

I did read his post and in now where did I read that he was required to buy one from the dealer. That being the case it would seem he can buy whatever he likes.

Whether or not he should carry a phone he can't sell doesn't really matter either way. I never buy phone based on what the salesman uses.

Thanks guys for all your help.

I agree with texaswireless about the iphone. If I am going to use it to help sell features being WM or blackberry why would I want an iphone. I like the iphone a lot but that would not help me at all.

I have changed my mind and am going with the blackjack II.

Why are you recommending them to stay away from WM? It's hands down the most flexible and versitile....plus, for a first time smartphone user, they'll actually recognize icons.

You are kidding, right? I am not saying that WM is completely useless. However, it is the most difficult to use for new smartphone users over Blackberry, iPhone, or even Palm by a long shot. Linux is far more versatile and flexible don't translate into stable and easy to use when it comes to Windows Mobile.

The may have icons they recognize, but in most cases they'll had to keep drilling down menu after menu to get to what they want and that's not "smart", especially for a phone. And of them all, WM is by far the most...

Good Choice! I am considering buying a Curve as well (Yes, I have the iPhone, but I miss having the 8300 and GPS is a must...) 😁
