Standard upgrade timeframe is 18 months (6 months before the end of your contract) but there are several factors that could either shorten this timeframe or extend it: Payment history, how much you spend a month, off network usage, etc.

I am eligible every 12 months because I have five lines, unlimited data and messaging and a bunch of other additional features. Basically, the more you spend monthly, the earlier you can upgrade. I even get my upgrade fee of $18 waived. Life is good.

Here's the fact on an upgrade fee: It's dump. Don't upgrade without that fee waived. It's fraud. All the companies just started doing this. They don't need the $18 bucks upgrade fee. Activation fee, maybe, but not upgrade fee. Especially on T-Mobile and AT&T. Don't tell me you need $18 bucks for me to swap out a sim card. Go to hell.

it's not fraud. it's a 'fee'. if you don't like it, don't upgrade. just buy your phone from another source. when you can either become a ceo and change company policy or start your own company, don't complain about a fee.

*side note... there is a lot of content created for different phones. money for that has to come from somewhere. also, when you download soemthing, the 'system' needs to know what platform ect. of all the things wireless companies do, they need money to do it with.

I never upgrade with a carrier. Just buy a phone. That's how you save money, and give yourself freedom off contract.

So, you're telling me that if I switch a T-Mo sim from an old phone to a new phone, the company pays money to figure out what phone I have? bollocks.

It takes two seconds for the IMEI to transmit to my account, and maybe another two seconds for the system to recognize what phone I have. That costs $18 bucks? More bollocks.

Upgrade fees are just another way that a super rich carrier gets MORE money from you. It's called price gouging, and they get away with it all the time. Don't fall for it.

If you have 5 lines, you can upgrade your phone every 12 months? Just the main line, or all?

I have 4 lines.

Thus giving a corporation that much more money.. and you still keep your contract for 2 more years.... YEAH RIGHT.

No no no, don't be senile.

I buy my phone new on ebay. (There's a trick in order to buy safely.) It's usually cheaper than full retail, if you bid correctly. Buying for GSM networks are better, because you can buy unlocked phones, oversea phones, ANY phone GSM. There's way more options.

I don't sign contracts when I sign up, cause I provide the phone. OR, get onto a contract, get a free phone: when you need a new one, buy the phone on ebay and switch the sim. You don't sign a new contract, and you can stay on your contract for 20 something years if you want. Contracts expire after two years, then it's month to month for some long time, and you keep your price plan.

Now, this is what I would do if I wasn't a phone salesman. Because I...

Why not if you cannot get the phone you want from the carrier? I would have signed a two year contract if ATT had the N82. But they don't Why waste an upgrade on a phone you don't really want? Besides you always have the option to switch carriers and take your phone with you.

see. it would just be me. i hardly use any minutes maybe between 450 and 900. i would get unlimited text and internet access for whatever device i end up getting. probably not enough for any earlier? 18 months is still not bad. and at that point you get the full discount with any MIRs and an 18 processing fee?

As far as I know, AT&T's upgrade policy is that if your bill is over $100 per month and payments are not regularly late then you can upgrade in 12 months after the contract is signed. I work for an AT&T authorized retailer and this seems to be the case every time. Your bill would run 59.99 for 900 anytime minutes 20.00 for unlimited texting....

Correct - at 18 months you would get the fully discounted price w/ any applicable MIR's and the $18 upgrade fee. But its not guaranteed - There are customer's who spend much more money who are not eligible to upgrade until their contracts are over due to bad payment history or high off network usage - this is rare... but does sometimes happen. As long as your are in a fairly populated area (basically not in some backwood town in the middle of nowhere) and pay on time, you should be fine!

It Varies by market and other circumstances. One thig is in the Texas Market the UPG on avereage are 18 to 21 months into a 2 years service agreemnet.(I work for them I know) The Upgrades are also depended upon LTV (long term value) How long the customer has been with the company and payment history.

However, there is a big deciding factor in all of this. The actual upg time is determined by the customers ARPU (Average revenue per user or Unit) How much money they pay and how much they make the company determines when the date for upg.

Things that hinder upgs: transfer of service or transfer of payment responsibility, (adds an automatic 11 months to the contract and $18 Fee) Account suspended more than 3 times will result in not...

Roffle. If you work for Verizon, you can upgrade your phone a whole heck of a lot earlier than 22 or even 18 months.
