I had heard a rumor that AT&T was going to come back after the Cingular merger but this is the first time I've seen it in print.

Yeah....AT&T announced this last year, shortly after the buyout of AWS was announced.

So does this mean that wih the proposed merger of sprint/nextel, I would imagine that att phones would have the ptt feature?
