Apple and AT&T competing against themselves? RE: iPod Touch
Part of the allure of the iPhone was it's iconic look, with it's touch screen capabilities. It had a distinct "look," that was unparalled in any gadget. It was one reason many people bought the phone.
But now Apple has the iPod Touch. Same look. Same features. Just no phone. Cheaper. Thinner. Same iconic touchscreen capabilities.
I would never have bought an iPhone... but I will admit it was a sexy looking gadget. Now, I don't even have to consider buying one. I can have the same look, for less.

Apple wasn't necessarily marketing the iPhone just for looks. One of their main marketing strategies was marketing its functionality hence the adds saying its a phone, web browser, ipod, movie player etc... The look is just the tip of the iceburg.
You stated that you wouldn't buy the iphone for having to pay extra everymonth for it. But many people already pay extra for webbrowsing and email so for these customers it is no different and in fact the internet rates are often cheaper in comparison to other PDA devices.

Because you won't have to pay for the iPhone service. and you won't have to worry about draining your own phone battery. It just gives you options, which is nice.
