Phone number portability
RHPFNov 16, 2004, 2:18 PM
I have a current Vzw acct, and I want to go to Cingular. Is there a way I can port the # after having the Cingular phone for say a week or two? Since it has I think a 14 day return policy. So I plan to keep the vzw acct active incase I decide to go back to them. Or do I have to port the # at the time of setting up the Cingular acct?

Once you port your number from Verizon, your account with them will be automatically closed. So, make sure you are out of contract or you will be hit with the $175 ETF.
You now have a 30 day trial period with Cingular. If you cancel with Cingular within that time, your number will be ported back to Verizon.
What you can do, is take a temporary number with Cingular with the trial period. If you like their service, you can then request a number change with your ported Verizon number. The cost is $36 for a number change.

I did this last year when I was switching over from Nextel to T-Mobile and I started the T-Mobile account before my Nextel ran out. I used a T-Mobile auth dealer. T-Mobile gave me a temporary number until my Nextel account officially ended like 2 weeks later.
At that time they ported my number without a problem really. The only problem I had was whenever I needed to reach out to the Authorized dealer who sold me the phone about getting back my rebate, they gave me the runaround all the time b/c of the two different numbers for each phone.

Actually, in that situation, I usually waive that fee as a courtesy. Not the customer's fault, it's the previous carrier's fault for having an ETF... lol
