I read 146,000 iPhones were activated. I didn't see any information on how many iPhones were sold. Might be hard for ATT to give the units sold figure without a joint release from Apple.

Apple is saying 270K iPhones sold. Could it be that at&t meant new activations? That would mean that 124K current at&t customers bought iPhones.

I expected a bit more net adds than this. Still, I think these numbers are great!
Could it be the shut down of TDMA that took place in the southern markets in June that kept those numbers a bit low?

I think a lot of people were holding out for the iPhone and didn't necessarily get it before the end of June (if they ended up getting it at all!). Even if a customer buys another phone, I'm sure many wanted to wait for the iPhone first.

It looks like iPhone isn't an undisputed hit. See attached Forbes article.

Highlights for those that can't open link:

Early Tuesday, AT&T - the exclusive wireless carrier for the iPhone - said it activated 146,000 iPhones in the first two days after the product was released, which mark the tail end of Apple's second quarter. Some analysts had forecast the iPhone's first-weekend sales would range from 250,000 to 700,000.

On Monday, CIBC World Markets analyst Ittai Kidron wrote that store checks show iPhone demand has been dropping significantly during the last 10 days.

"We have noticed decent inventories at stores, and thin demand at best. In fact, most Apple store vis...

Apple shares fall on iPhone numbers By JORDAN ROBERTSON, AP Technology Writer
Tue Jul 24, 5:13 PM ET

SAN JOSE, Calif. - AT&T Inc. wiped some of the glow off Apple Inc.'s iPhone on Tuesday, releasing numbers that showed fewer people than expected signed up for service in the first two days of the multimedia cell phone's release.

AT&T โ€” the iPhone's exclusive carrier โ€” said it activated 146,000 iPhones on June 29 and 30, a number that disappointed investors following some analyst forecasts that Apple would sell 500,000 or more iPhones in its first weekend.

The news interrupted a stead...

I don't think network has as much to do with demand as the price of what you are getting. If they had 3g data, better camera, mms capabilites, mass text capabilites, and a larger hard drive then the current price would be well worth it. AT the current feature offering I would by the 8gb for no more than $400. And it is also unfortunate that the at&t and apple joint venture is mandating their $20 data plan on people. IF they could loosen the restrictions their target audience would grow substantially.

Well there are some smart people after all who actually research a gadget before being hypnotized by the marketing juggernaut.

I knew this phone would be a bust. For $200 it's a GREAT toy. For $600 it only sold to those who are more concerned with "look at me" then reality.

Those who bought the phone with hopes of ripping off their brethren are stuck with a phone they won't activate, LOL

I think that all of the other companies think that the only phone AT&T has is the iPhone. The Pearl, Curve, and 8525 all are better than the iPhone. Could these new models be why AT&T has had some good sales? Wait till the HTC Tilt comes out or the new Sony Ericcson 5.0Megapixles come out for Xmas. Also, there are rumors of a price drop for Blackberry BIS to 19.99 or 9.99 if AT&T allows. Oh yeah, Nokia's got some new PDA/Smartphones that no one else will have that are pretty nice. That is the reason AT&T is having a good go of it. Now if we only had a phone that could repel H2O we would rule. And no chargebacks to reps.
