the real question of the iphone!!
"can you get the iphone unlocked?" of course fcc law states that any phone can be unlocked if the customer requests it...
the real question is once you get it unlocked, how do you get a new sim card in it? it has a fixed batery cover, so we cant just take the batery out and put our own sim chip in it.
i havent heard anything saying that there is a specific "hatch" or door for an existing customer to put his old sim chip in.
so how do existing customers get their numbers into this iphone?

i'm sorry thats what the law says about unlocking. The says that its not illegal for the customer to unlock the phone themselves. There were debates that unlockin...

Kinda like DRM, it doesn't limit your use, it protects you from the temptation of using your purchased media in "fair use" ways they don't approve of.
Same turd, different polishes. Like HBO's CTO officer who wants to try to polish that turd by calling it "Digital Consumer Enablement". 🤣

Cingular: We Made Apple Bend by Sascha Segan1.10.07
LAS VEGAS—Movie studios and record labels have bent to Apple. But in the end, Apple bent to Cingular with...

People who unlock phones are "bad guys", which is a euphemism for criminal. There is no distinction between consumers or companies in the comments when considering the context.
Cingular is trying to prevent the companies that buy large quantities of phones, then unlock them all and sell them with whatever service they wish for.
Actually, they are taking explicit steps to prevent consumers & companies from using the phone with whatever service they wish for.
More to the point, are you implying it is Cingular's contention that a company cannot purchase a product and resell that product in accordance with the law?
If that's not an anti-competitive practice, what i...

Joking aside, I am curious about the question I raised and its possible answers.

If that's not an anti-competitive practice, what is?
No arguing, but any ideas?

Why shouldn't they? They have exclusivity contracts for this phone just so others can not acquire and resell. Granted I have no Idea how they plan to acquire them unless purchased over seas and sold back over here as the only way to purchase them in the US is via The New AT&T. 🙄

if i purchase a phone i can do whatever i want with it. if they are scared about it being used on someone elses service they should be, since their cs sucks, their dropped call rate is getting higher and they think they are so damn high and mighty that they don't need certain customers.
🙄
We were talking about resellers.

I thought they were also selling them in Apple retail stores and on Apple.com.. I mean its an Apple product.. not a cingular product.. wierd
I had a call center person once say it is illegal to unlock a phone.
You might be breaking a contractual obligation, but that is civil act.
And the FCC has never said unlocking your phone is criminal!
Think even deeper, carriers can give unlocking codes to their client; so does the company have the abilit to choose which customer they let break the so called law over others? How can that be? Because it is not illegal.
Unlocking an Iphone is a criminal act according to Apple and Cingular.
Perhaps I should have bolded the selected text above in my initial post as well.
I was trying to highlight the draconian steps taken and Cingular's apparent belief that your property is actually their property.
According to the quotes in the article, it appears that you are not entitled to use the Iphone as you want, despite it being your property in a bid to "grow our business" in what I consider to be an anti-competitive practice.
when the phone comes out and u buy it
then and only then will u notice where the sim card lies
this is a pointless thread about the iphone
u as an individual won't be able to lock the phone not because its not possible its because u don't have the intellegence to do it
get over the fact that u have to be an at&t customer to have this equipment ... buy a contract get an iphone be happy
end of story

Okay see, where does the SIM card go, I think people are overlooking the question, because I sure as hell don't use one phone, I have different phones for different things. I have a PDA that I use at work and travel, and then a V3xx that I use for going out so I don't have to carry a brick with me, but where does the SIM card go on the iphone?
more than likely its like the treo 650, with a sim card slot/tray on the top...it would be just stupid to not have an easily accessible sim card
Some people just don't read.
