The current phone you have is likely locked to Cingular if you purchased it from Cingular.

Most stores will sell you any phone at retail, but I do not believe our website does. I could be wrong on that part though. Just inquire at a store about the retail cost for a phone and they'll give you your options.

Postpaid phones can be put onto prepaid service, but prepaid cannot be put onto postpaid service. I don't have and answer as to why on that one, but I know it's the rules.

yes, you should be able to use it on Cingular..but depending on where you are your service might stink or not be as good as it could be... as it only carries one of the bands(frequencies) that cingular uses. If you want to get the best coverage look for a quad band phone (850/900/1800/1900)

If you're going to use Cingular make sure the phone you purchase uses the 850mhz band. Without it you will almost certainly have reception problems.

https://www.phonescoop.com/carriers/forum.php?fm=m&f ... » So this is what you do....
So you are looking for a new cheap phone because you lost or even broke your phone and you still have 15 months before you can get a phone at a discount price. But you're desperate.
1st you go into Cingular and say "HI, I would like to get a new pay as you go line."
The rep says ok what plan? You say I dont care I just want the number and do not need to get any time on it..
If the rep says "ok' then you buy the cheap phone (any prepay phone)and you get the new number and you leave the store never talking about you're line that you pay monthly. Then when you get to your car you take out the pre pay sim card and toss it and put in your sim to...

You are wrong. Any Cingular phone, prepaid or postpaid, can be used with any prepaid or postpaid account. You could use the Motorola C139 on postpaid if you wanted to.

You are wrong. Treos and Blackberry's can be used on prepaid. Using the data on them would have to be pay per use though, and would murder your prepaid account balance.

Clarification: You cannot use a prepaid phone on a postpaid account.

You don't have to go through all the subterfuge you mentioned in one of your previous posts. If someone wants to just buy a prepaid phone I'll sell it to them. I don't care why they want it. I'll tell them it can't be used on postpaid though.

I've personally seen this happen, because they pulled this new policy out of nowhere. We used to sell prepaid phones to postpaid customers all the time to help them out. Then one day, they started coming in with suspended accounts. The prepaid IMEIs are stored in a database. Periodically, they'll scan accounts for people using those IMEIs. If they find one on postpaid, it gets suspended.

I don't know why. I've asked ...
