I am trying to get some info for my sister...She has a contract with Cingular and her phone is toast...She apparently got it wet (though the indicator sticker is barely pink) and they won't replace her phone under warranty...My question is this, can she buy a prepaid phone and stick her regular sim card in it and use it normal on her account? The sim is fine, she has tried it in other cingular phones and it has worked no problem...I just didn't know if the prepaid phones are different..Any help would be great, thanks!
...
no prob, cingular may not like you doing that, but its perfectly fine.....go online and purchase a phone for $20....or better yet go into walmart and get a phone....pop your sim in and your good....
....oh yeah, don't wanna hear anything in 6 months when she is complaining about her chitty phone...
..your best bet is to go to a cingy store get a phone to use...buy it at retail and use while your waiting on a phone to come in that you will like off of ebay.....and once you get it return your phone back to the store you got it at in good condition....
...just be sure to go to a COR store when you do this, you don't want to be a pain to the small business owners.
...
Why would I wanna do that if I can pay next to nothing for a decent phone on a prepaid account?
...
Because you can't get a decent phone on prepaid. You're better off buying unlocked.
...
As long as it works, it doesn't need bluetooth or a camera or anything. I was just afraid that a prepaid phone would have to be unlocked before I put her sim card in it...I guess this is not the case..

The Nokia 6030 you get from the GoPhone site will be the same as one from Cingular.com on a postpaid plan. You'd be able to use your SIM with no problems.
The only issue with GoPhones is that they're cheap because they're not good phones. I'd highly recommend steering clear of the Moto C139. Spend a bit more for the Nokia or the Pantech C380 - you get what you pay for.

You can get a moto v235 for less than $100. It does have a camera but its a good phone.

The official Cingular/AT&T answer to this question is NO! Why would Cingular/AT&T allow you to buy a heavily discounted prepaid phone when they can charge you much more for an early upgrade or no commitment price? Plus, rumor was that there is going to be some sort of a system block that is either in effect now or will be soon.
The non-Cingular/AT&T approved answer is HELL YEAH! I bought a Motorola C139 for a backup phone in case anything happens to my MOTORAZR V3xx.

The real world answer is if they see a prepaid IMEI in use on your account, they'll suspend it. This is something I've seen happen many times.

Which is why it's so handy that GSM allows us to switch SIM cards & not register our IMEIs. 😉
True, it is possible that the IMEI can be found in the system, but no one is going to be combing through network usage history (where the correct IMEI is found) looking for Gophone IMEIs on postpaid accounts. The fraud dept has much more important things to do.

It's nice the Cingular allows this, because VERIZON doesn't. I tried this same thing with Verizon and they have a policy where a prepaid phone must be active with the prepaid service for at least 6 months before you can use it on a post paid account.

If you're looking for a nice solid phone, I'd go with a V190 GoPhone. It's got a great screen resolution and is only the third phone I've ever seen with Media Ticker (V557 and L6 being the others). You can get one for $60 at a few retailers.
