AT&T Wireless has become the center of a new wave of merger rumors and reports. Most speculation has focused on the possibility of Cingular buying the company. But more recent reports point to other potential buyers, including NTT DoCoMo, Nextel, and Vodafone. NTT DoCoMo already owns 15 percent of AT&T Wireless. Vodafone currently owns a large stake in Verizon Wireless, but AT&T's GSM technology would be a better fit with Vodafone's international networks and global plans. Another report indicates that AT&T Wireless has already hired Merrill Lynch & Co. to arrange the merger or sale.
how would Nextel afford to buy AWS,i dont think so.as for Vodaphone they own like 35% or so...

Consolidation rumours in the USA
Media reports are circulating that AT&T Wireless and Cingular Wireless are in merger talks for their USA based GSM networks. The merged network would become the country's largest, overtaking Verizon Wireless.

T-Mobile has also been reported to be interested in a merger, although talks with Cingular, owned by SBC and BellSouth are said to be far more advanced. Vodafone has also on several occasions been rumoured to be considering selling its 45% stake in Verizon and buying a GSM operator to more closely fit with its global coverage. AT&T Wireless was considered the only viable target due to it being directly listed on a stock market as opposed to being owned by a parent as is the case with T-Mobile and Cin...
