Well, many of Cingular and AT&T's service areas overlap, so I believe they can roam off of each others network where one of the other doesn't offer "home" service. Since Manhattan is easily covered by both carriers existing towers, it seems like the combined network of Cingular would deal with adding coverage, the combined company probably would not improve existing coverage...only add service areas.

ATTWS will not benefit one shred in NYC from the merger w/Cingular. The only carriers positioned to benefit will be Cingular and T-Mobile. Why? 1) Because Cingular currently does not own any network of their own in NYC - they roam 100% on T-Mobile's network, which is all 1900mhz. Once the merger is complete, they will roam on AT&T's network (which will now be their own), as well as having a four-year agreement to continue roaming on T-Mobile. Then and only then will current Cingular customers be able to have both 850 & 1900 in NYC. B) Because T-Mobile will regain alot of their own fully owned spectrum and current T-Mobile customers should see less network congestion than they currently do. So..... current Cingular customers should see a sign...

Now hold on here a minute your contradicting yourself. You say that aws customer will get no benefit when the merger goes through. Yest you say that cingular has a roaming agreement with tmobile.....When the merger goes through your saying that aws customers are still going to be left high and dry? When the merger goes through aws customers will become cingular customers and will have the benefits of roaming off of tmobile.

ATTWS has already started to give the Cingualr customers access to the network, Some parts of LI and NJ are opened up at 850 for Cingular customers on the joint venture. Phase one will be to allow Cingular customers access to the ATTWS network. I have heard that current ATTWS users will eventually get access to the "joint venture" network. I know that is the plan for now, but we will have to wait and see. Does anyone know when the deal will be done. I have already gotten emails from Cingular scheduling trainings regarding the merger. Any info?

guys... the tmobile thing will disappear AFTER the merger. Cingular has been building a network for themselves in NYC and when ATT customers migrate, they will get the cingular coverage as well, but the Tmobile coverage will not be there.

Wrong, sorry to be rude but that is incorrect. Cingular has not bought their own spectrum in NYC. they are partners in the Joint-venture netork co-owned with T-Mobile. They have access to that for 4 more years and they about to close the attws deal within the week. I get cell site reports from all 3 Carriers(attws, t-mobile, and cingular) The t-mobile and cingular updates are the exact same sites. Joint venture Cingular customers are already starting to get access to the attws 850/1900 network, that is why some Cingular phones are starting to read Cingular extend in the home area. It is still up in the air, regarding if attws handsets will get access to the joint venture network, meaning the Cingular/t-mobile 1900 network. Sorry to ran...

Funny, because i have the paperwork that shows that attws will END it's roaming agreements in NYC with Tmobile, post-merger. It's in with the same briefing that discusses the Tmobile aquisition of Cingular's spectrum in Las Vegas.

ATTWs has to roaming agreements in the NYC/Nj with T-mobile. They own a complete dual dand network here. Thye do currently have agreement with t-mobile and cinuglar in other markets. I know that the cingular customers will get access to the attws network, as that has started already. However it remains to be seen if the joint venture network (tmobile and cingualr sites) will be opened up to current attws subscibers.

I know they WILL NOT. Cingular is dumping Tmobile. As far as I understand, Cingulat will retain some of the joint Venture sites, but I am not 100% on that, but Cingular will not be using the Joint Venture network after the merger.

thye have access to the joint venture network for 4 years from now. i guess it will take a while to "re-train" or reprogram the handsets out there to look for the other network. Should be an interesting transition.

With TDMA or GSM phones updating the information for which sites the phone can use is quite simple process. Happends all automaticly.

Like an over the air programming? Should be an intersting couple of months during the transition. Looking forward to the holiday season. We just finished a 50k rebranding on one of our stores and are getting ready to make some improvements as one of 1 of 2 others. Can not wait until it is done, contractors suck

Yes. It does an over the air programing. Granted the customer has to have their phone turn on for 90 minutes withing 5 days of the over the air going out and that covers 95% of our customers. The other few don't notice untill they go traveling to a new area and then they have to call in and have the Over the air redone. This over the air goes out anytime we have a change in roaming agreements so it's a pretty tried and true process.

Its so funny to see TDMA customers on national plans who come in and say they have been having problems while traveling. I look at the phone aand it reads home instead of att, there are a lot of handsets out there that never got the initial Over the air program, we call dsg and have it resent for them.

What EI said is what I'm assuming is right. I have read the same thing in an article before. I'll have to find it and post here.

The conditions of this were/are:

1. Cingular would give up its "stake" in the T-Mobile/Cingular network in NYC to T-mobile.

2. AT&Ts existing network in NYC would be Cingular's new primary network there.

3. Cingular would retain its agreements with T-Mobile's network in NYC for 4 more years.

Now after those 4 years are up I am predicting that Cingular will have made considerable upgrades to ST&T's current network there and not renew their deal with T-Mobile.
