how is the voice service? who does cricket use for network

cricket uses cdma so it's pretty good standard service, and it's upgrading a lot of markets as well as the new markets to evdo, so it's reliable...they run their own network

For what it's worth, I've had an excellent experience with Cricket for the past 9 years (primarily in the Knoxville market). I do not work for Cricket, nor have I ever had any affiliation. This is just my opinion

At first, the service was local only, so it was a trade-off between no roaming or paying for minute overage fees with traditional carriers. Obviously, local-only service did not suit people who traveled frequently, but for those of us who used a lot of local minutes (perhaps in business), and seldom traveled, it was a reasonable alternative to expensive high-minute plans from traditional carriers (of course, there were no unlimited plans from traditional carriers at that time).
