First off I love sprint's call clarity, coverage, plans, and phones.... customer service is really bad, and here's my issue with them now.

I really want a new phone, and after 18 months I was supposed to get a new phone credit, well 19 months into my contract my credit was pulled and the deal was extended to 24months.

Now I NEED a new phone in the next 3 days, when I talked to customer service I was told that there was nothing they could do. And either I paid the extra cash or I would have to wait the remaining months. (3)

Now it would be incredibly easy for me to go to Cingular, Verizon, or T-Mobile and get my new phone for basically free, sign a 2 year contract (same as sprint) and just have 2 phones for the next 3 months or just...

Lets see I just did that, but I do remember reading the guidelines to that, but can't find it now..something about if you signed up prior to such and such date then it would happen, but if you signed up after that date, it was a little different...hmmmm

I just went to the Sprint Store and the girl said there was nothing she could do.... nothing anyone could do. She pretty much said go change carriers :-(

I'm looking at Cingular and T-Mobile now... I really wish Sprint would have come through on this one...

If you port before your contract is up it will charge your early termination fee, but you will be able to port after your contract is up. if you just let it run out for 3 months. and wouldnt a sprint bill for 3 months be the 150 ETF or does sprint charge more?

Indeed, you should be able to pick up a Tri-Mode CDMA Motorola STAR-TAC (best phone they ever made IMO) for a cheap price...

What happens if I get one off ebay?

Does it still void my $150 sprint credit like it would if I just flat out bought one today?

(My 24 month comes up Jan 1st, so it's basically 2 months... that's why it kinda seems like a **** deal to pay full price right now knowing it will set my phone upgrade back another 24 months.. ie throw $150 down the drain.)

No, It will not void your Sprint credit. It will just be an ESN change.

But you should be able to get a good Sprint phone off of Ebay for about $100 or less. The only thing is you won't have it within the next 3 days, like you originally said you needed.

DO NOT listen to SForsyth01. Your 24 months will start over when you switch phones on the account. DO NOT do it. I know it's happened to me. There are special deals that Sprint did for those people that actually qualified at the 18-month rule. Look for the rebate forms that Sprint/Nextel has on display around their stores.

When I was with Sprint, I was able to activate many new phones that I purchased off of ebay without starting my 24 months over. You just have to make sure that you specifically tell them that it is not an upgrade, that you are supplying equipment that you already owned. As long as I told them that, I never had a problem.

SForsythe01 is correct, changing the phone out does not mean you are resigning your contract.

IF you change your plan you are.

Be careful, if you are going from a visoin phone to a non vision phone or vise versa your plan will change, and that will reset your contract

i used to sell sprint phones...

as i read thru this thread, it appears that there is a breakdown in communication concerning the term "24-month period"

be sure it is considered correctly :

when a person joins sprint/nextel as a new customer, or make a change to their account which the CSR says will require renewing their contract, a 2-yr contract is being discussed...i.e. a "24-month period"

also, when a person changes handsets on their line of service (AKA phone number), even if it's to the same model of handset, (i.e., the change is based on handset ESN, or Electronic Serial Number) the upgrade policy is considered.

the upgrade policy has changed recently: it used to be a flat 18-month/$150 policy (i.e., if a person keeps th...

They WILL reset your time. For any possible reason they can come up with. They are shady, crooked people. My father is a sprint regional manager and he HATES it. He is close to retirement, and keeps going, but the bottom line is sprint will rip you off whenever possible.

That said, their policies actually reward you for switching... so do.

I have had Sprint for 6 years and have worked with the in the wireless industry for 4 years. I have carried Sprint, Nextel, and TMobile phones and in the same area, side by side, to compare coverage. No company is perfect. I have had signal on the TM in places that Sprint did not and vise versa. The only thing I have found that TM can do that Sprint can't is send and receive text messages and search the web on a roaming network. The coverage is very comparable.

When you originally signed up, the upgrade policy was $150 MIR (Mail in rebate) after 18 months. It has changed, however. It is now a $75 IR (Instant Rebate) after 12 months, and the full $150 IR after 24 months. However, customers who signed up previously can still get the discount. There is an escalation process, where a customer who has had their phone for 18-23 months will qualify for a $75 IR plus a $75 MIR (the same $150, but half is instant, rather than waiting for the whole amount). As a Radio Shack employee, this was part of our training, as we can easily escalate a customer and provide them with the full $150 off, even if they have only had their phone for 18 months.

BE CAREFUL BUYING A PHONE OFF EBAY OR ANYWHERE, FOR THAT ...

Are you serious? I'm really considering switching to Sprint because, honestly, Cingular has been sucking majorly in my town. That's one thing that worries me though. I'd hate to mess my phone up and have to buy a new one, only to have my contract extended even longer. What if I'm not happying with Sprint service and Cingular finally gets their stuff together? Am I going to have to put my phone in a protecteve bullet proof box so that I can finally get out of my Sprint contract?

Clarification: The only time you would renew/extend your contract by *changing phones* (meaning the actual handset equipment) is if you take advantage of a "New For You" rebate (the 12/24 month upgrade program that has been discussed on this thread). This means if you purchase a new phone WITHOUT a rebate (such as if you break your phone and need a new one after 6 months) you will NOT extend your contract *unless* you change something on your *plan* that requires a renewal. So, if you're worried about contract dates, this will not be a concern for you.

Contract renewals are for promotional offers (rebates included) and many plan changes. That's all as far as I am aware.

Well, here's an update on my situation. Not sure why I wasn't notified that there was a reply to my post, but I was just looking around and noticed it. I did jump Cingular and went with Sprint. So far, I've been happy with the service. I'm not too fond of my phone, I think I just want more out of it. I have the Sanyo MM-8300 and considering purchasing a Treo 650. Either way, I contacted Sprint through ecare about this situation. Here's what I was told....

"Please allow me to provide you the rebate related information. We are
offering $150.00 rebate for the handsets which are older than 24 months
on the account and $75.00 on the current phones which are between 12 to
23 months old.

No, it isn't a cheap person. It is someone asking for real value for their dollar. It is someone who is likely to retire by the time they are fifty becaue they set the expectation of value for their money, not a cell phone cashier.

Real value for their dollar. Hmm!! What dollar? The money you pay monthly is for a service you signed up for and should not be confused with the phone being used for the service.

I love it when customers come in and when told they would have to pay full price for a phone going into some crazy spiel about how they pay $150 every month and they are a valued customer.

I did not force you to get such a costly plan. Maybe you should consider not talking so much and you could drop to a cheaper plan. What you pay is not my fault.

In addition, just because you pay your bill doesn't make you a valued customer. It makes you just like everyone else in this country that pays their bills.

On a side note, this reminds me of the Chris Rock H...
