Nokia 3588I

Has anyone here got this phone yet? i was looking at it and next to the battery, there is a slot for a SIM card. what is this all about??

It not a slot for a SIM card to slide into, but for some other use. Since, Nokia has not put out a Users Guide yet, there is no way to find what that hole with contacts is for. I know on my Nokia 6340i it has a little card that slides into the contacts.

Maybe it's a slot for some type of memory card they plan on releasing? Since it's a color phone, maybe they plan on providing a means to store even more pics, backgrounds, etc...

It is a SIM card attachement, but Nokia makes models for GSM companies as well. since Sprint is a CDMA, its not available.

It's an R-UIM slot. R-UIM is the CDMA equivalent of SIM.

In certain Latin American and Chinese versions of that phone, that slot is active. There are carriers in those parts of the world that offer R-UIM CDMA phones.

In the North American version, the slot is disabled and the phone has a hard-wired ESN like most CDMA phones. Nokia keeps the slot in the North American version to save on manufacturing costs. It's cheaper to simply disable it than to have different molds, assembly lines, etc. for different parts of the world.

In China, I believe R-UIM is actually mandated by the government. In Latin America, R-UIM is sold as a global roaming option. They make R-UIM cards that you can put in a GSM phone for use overseas. It's the best o...
