Does anyone know when the Epic will get Froyo? I am trying to dedcide between Evo and Epic. Leaning more towards the Epic because of the physical keyboard.

-Next gen processor,
-HTC (which means it has a CHANCE of getting an update),
-excellent design (if this thing is anything like the merge, it's verging on best in class),
-actually useful manufacturer modifications on top of android as opposed to mere eye candy

The shift has a smaller, lower quality screen, the slide mechanism is nonexistent, and it has a smaller processor.

With that said, though, Samsung really has dropped it in updating its flagship android line.

The processor on the shift is more powerful than that on the epic. Full stop. The fact that it is clocked at a slower speed means NOTHING when it comes to actual performance.

The screen on the Shift is TFT, which means it will look better outdoors, and whites/text will look a LOT better. I have an AMOLED DInc, and the SAMOLED galaxy phones are similar. Text is fuzzy and whites are offcolor. Considering I browse the internet a lot from my phone, that's a deal breaker.

The smaller screen on the Shift means that the pixel density on the shift is greater (again lending to cleaner text).

I don't care for the Epic's keyboard either.

But even ignoring all that, the Shift isn't a Samsung, which instantly makes it a better choice th...

The processor is not more powerful the version of android its running is and the fact that it has jit enabled. But the hummingbird is still faster.

Tft is no match for Samoled your dreaming. Do the research or just go compare the screens on the Epic vs the Shift. The Epic looks vibrant and high quality the shift looks faded and washed out. Who wants to stare at a super bright screen all day. They tft whites are blinding and can be more irritating then u make them out to be.

The Epics keyboard is second to none

You obviously need to learn more about touchwiz

Wrong.. the Epic 4g hhas already had 2 updates

Maintenance updates don't count. I'm talking useful features.

And hummingbird is fast, but the way samsung handles memory erases almost all of that advantage. 2nd gen snapdragon's are also better at handling battery and a greater volume of processes. Raw speed isn't everything.

I have a TFT LCD and a AMOLED screen infront of me. Yes, the colors on a TFT look washed out in comparison, but text is a LOT sharper, and that's important to me. That being said, SLCD (like the screen on the Tbolt) is amazing, and the new version of AMOLED is promising to be decent as well. we'll see.

And no I don't need to learn more about touchwiz. It's as useful as Motoblur or LG's customizations are, and that isn't saying much. What useful featur...

Its actually Samsungs fileshare system which is rfs but flash ext4 and you will see the speed behind the hummingbird cpu.

Yes a tft does have sharper text but the text on the samoled look perfect and most people cannot tell the difference between the 2.

Flashing Ext4 requires root access, which voids your warranty. ANY phone becomes better with root access.

Same to be said about any phone running a newer version of android especially from 2.1 to 2.2 which is expected to be pushed out to the Epic this month. It only voids your warranty if your not smart enough to restore your phone before you take it in for warranty

No, it ALWAYS voids your warranty. The difference is that at the moment carriers don't care as long as you flash it back.

You want to know why hardware makers are starting to try and crack down on rooting? You're part of the problem. Rooting's not the issue, people trying to get warranty replacements when they bust their phone rooting is.

lmao you think the only reason manufactures have to replace phones is because someone rooted it? I can name a whole list of reason the Epic or any other phone should be replaced under warranty. No device is perfect but rooting can get you one step closer. Most people who root to begin with take much better care of there phone and have reasons they should have taken there phone in for replacement long before they ever rooted. YOU are also part of the problem! Regardless if my phone where to screw up it would most likely be something that the warranty was intended to cover in the first place.

No, see, work a month in cust service/tech support and then try saying that.

Yes, hardware issues should still be covered, but do you have any idea the number of phones verizon (and I'm assuming sprint) had to replace because people messed up rooting their phones?

the Evo shift is a mid range phone not high end like the Epic or Evo and it lacks features in so many ways in comparison to the Epic 4g. The 1gz processor in the Epic is still better then the shift the gpu in the Epic would crush the Shift in gaming. The keyboard on the Epic is better. The Epic has a ff camera for video chat. The Epic takes better photos and video and has really impressive camera settings. Most importantly the SAMOLED screen makes everything look better on the Epic than the Shift. 😎

SAMOLED is great for pictures, not for text, web, etc.

80% of my use of a smartphone has text involved, so LCD is a better option

It will most likely get froyo, but it will most likely NEVER get gingerbread (while the Evo more than likely will)

On top of that, SENSE=Eye Candy and Useful innovations. Touchwiz=EyeCandy and little else.

If you want a keyboard, get the Shift.

You obviously don't know anything about TouchWiz so let me school u.

TouchWiz offers some dramatic improvements to the android os and not just colored panels behind app icons. Here is a list of touchwiz only features

Improved notification bar with 1 touch access to wifi, bluetooth, gps and 4g. 2.2 adds silent mode

File manager (much needed on android)

Custom lockscreen that answers, ignores, or replys with text msg in one swipe. Also notifies and allows you to quickly check and respond to any text or phone calls that were missed

Custom phone app. That gives you so many features over the stock android app I won't list them all

Task manger that lets you close running apps, see/uninstall apps, see avaliable memory for phone/...

-File manager. This is what we call an app, not a part of the UI. FailBlur has this as well. Astro is a free download and offers far more features.

-The notification bar replaces a widget called the power control bar, which is stock android. Moving it into the notification panel is nice, but not revolutionary. I have the same feature in the ROM I'm running now, I still use the power bar because it's easier. LG devices have the power control in the task bar as well.

-Android doesn't need a task manager. FULL STOP. That's like giving a perfectly healthy kid a crutch. There is no point to it. You can see available phone memory in the setting menu and uninstall from there as well.

-The lockscreen is annoying, but if you're i...

The file manager is included in touchwiz.. if you like the extra step go for it. đŸ¤Ŗ

Widgets on the home screen take much longer to get to than having it on the notification bar which you will also have faster access to between apps. So if you like the extra steps go right ahead.

Tell that to the 15plus hours I get with it and the 8-9 hours without it. 😎 Battery life will improve from shutting down certain apps running in the background using task manager included with touchwiz.

No it doesn't the miui lock screen does not have all the features or the ease of use the touchwiz lock screen does.

Sense does not allow you to see each type of contact and back them up accordingly nor does it give you a wall with an entire stream of ...

-They could've included a file manager out of the box without requiring a whole UI overhaul. Cyanogen can do this with AOSP. I'm sure sammy could manage.

-Notification bar: Pull down notification bar, tap icon. Widget: Hit home button, tap icon. not any longer. LG also does this, without requiring a huge overlay skin. It can also be built into AOSP, as shown by cyanogen.

-You get more time with the task killer because you don't know how to set up your phone. This literally takes less than 10 minutes and is MUCH better for your phone. The reason your battery is draining is because you have your apps pulling for data too often. the task killer resets those counters, NOTHING more. Apps sitting in memory consume no more battery t...

I find it interesting that your initial comment was about how TW doesnt give you ANYTHING.. then when someone points out all the things they like about TW, you respond with "You can DL something similar from market" and "Rom 0983249823752456345 from billy jo in the basement has that too"

Your initial statement was about TW vs. Sense, not TW vs. custom kernels, roms, baking, cooking and rooting.

A fair statement about the two from my personal experience:
I love TW, I love sense.. I have a very similar clock/weather app called Fancy Widget on my Epic.. I still like the HTC weather/clock combo better.
